HELEN Evans became the youngest ever player to score in the Women’s Welsh Premier League as Aberystwyth Town Ladies opened with a hard earned 1-1 draw with Cyncoed at Cae Baker.

A bright start by Aber saw Ffion Wyn Roberts and young Helen Evans give the visiting defence a real test, but at the other end Athina Vernava was a real threat.

Prompted by some big tackles in midfield by Amy Jenkins and Kelly Thomas Aber took the lead in the 30th minute when, after good work by Roberts, talented 15 year-old Helen Evans scored at the far post.

Casey Thomas and Jo Hodge were prominent for the visitors, but Aber dug deep with good defence by Sian Evans and Josie Pugh.

Cyncoed stepped up their pressure in the second half, but keeper Kate Christopher did really well to keep Aber in front, and produced a breathtaking save on the hour to deny Fern Burrage.

Their equaliser came from a corner, however, as Sian Evans unfortunately diverted the ball into her own net.

Cyncoed pushed on for the three points but despite losing Evans to an injury the midfield of Jenkins, Thomas and Becca Williams, ably assisted by captain Ffiona Evans and young Helen Evans held firm for a point.

Mard Jones and Nia Witts also played their part in a hard-earned point for Aber.
