A FORMER Aberaeron schoolboy has scooped the Player of the Month award within the Dafabet Welsh Premier League, after producing some inspiring performances for Bangor City.
Henry Jones signed for the Citizens this summer from Swansea City, where he came up through the Academy system and graduated through the Under-18 and Under-21s ranks at the Liberty Stadium.
The midfielder was scouted by the Swans at the age of just eight, and gained his first professional contract in 2011.
The 23-year-old has quickly imposed himself as the focal point of a new-look, rejuvenated Bangor side, but he insists that there is still a lot more from him.
“I think I’ve started well, but I have very high expectations for myself and I know I can go on a gear or two again,” he said.
“I still feel I can have more impact in and around the box, with goals and assists, and can contribute more in every aspect.
“I’ve started well and I’m pleased with how I’ve adapted so far, but there is a lot more to come from me going forward.
“I’ve got big aspirations for myself and I don’t think I’ll ever be happy with how I am doing because I always know I can do more,” Jones told WelshPremier.co.uk.
Jones captained the Swansea City Under-21 side on a number of occasions, but did not make a senior appearance, despite being capped by Wales at Under-21 level.
He said the transition into Welsh Premier football offered new challenges, with results more crucial than performance.“I found it a bit challenging to adapt, but at the end of the day it’s still the same game wherever I’m playing,” said Jones.‘There are differences, this league being more physical, more about getting results and winning games, whereas with the Under-21s at Swansea it was about individual performance and development.”Under new manager Andy Legg, the new-look Bangor side has been flying high in the top three of the Welsh Premier League, in which it has failed to make an impact in recent years - and there is talk of the club going full-time in the future.Jones said: “It’s a team that is still gelling. There’s a new owner, new players, new staff, new manager, everything, so the supporters need to be patient with us.“We started a lot better than people expected, but everyone needs to understand that we’re still learning about each other.”He added: “I believe 100 per cent that the top six is achievable this season. In some games we’ve played really well whereas in others it has gone missing a little bit, so we just need to find that consistency, find what we’re good at and then stick to it.”
