ABERYSTWYTH Town Ladies claimed the third win of their Women’s Welsh Premier League campaign with a 3-1 success over Briton Ferry at Park Avenue.
The Seasiders bounced back from a disappointing defeat at Port Talbot to produce a winning performance with Sian Evans, Ffiona Evans and Amy Jenkins all getting onto the scoresheet for the hosts.
Manager Kevin Jenkins said: “The girls put in a tremendous shift, and after a few stern words in training midweek, they came out of the blocks quick against a resilient Ferry side looking for points.
“It gives us a bit of breathing space now and plenty confidence for the remaining six league games and the two-legged semi of the Central Wales Senior Cup against Aberystwyth University in March.”
Aber kicked off with the intensity manager Jenkins and coach Ray Hughes were hoping for, and they were soon on the attack as Amy Jenkins was presented with the first chance of the game with a powerful long range shot, which was tipped around the post by the visiting keeper.
Frontrunner Ffion Wyn Roberts used her strength and held the ball up well for player of the match Helen Evans to run tirelessly at the Ferry left back, and it came as no real surprise when the deadlock was eventually broken in the 41st minute.
Tania Wylde’s curling corner was cleared off the line to Ffiona Evans, who squared the ball across the six yard box to Sian Evans to fire the Seasiders in front.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Aber in the ascendency for most of the time, and a second goal arrived on the hour as Ffiona Evans got on the end of a Josie Pugh free kick to slot home.
Aber were not finished yet, and the goal of the game arrived soon afterwards when Jenkins got her head on to the end of another Wylde corner with a bullet header at the near post with 15 minutes to go.
Kelly Thomas, who was winning every header in the middle of the park, almost made it 4-0 when her long-range strike was superbly tipped over the crossbar.
Deep into injury time Briton Ferry’s Angela Ninian bagged a consolation goal from a corner, but the game was over as a contest as Aber picked up three points.
Aber now have a couple weeks’ break due to cup fixtures and return to league action on the 12 February when they travel to Cardiff Met in search of more points.
