VETERAN defender Jonathan Foligno is ‘relishing the challenge’ of going against Cymru Premier League attackers after signing on the dotted line for Aberystwyth Town.

The Seasiders have turned to experience to shore up their defence and hope his no-nonsense style of play and leadership qualities will provide support to a very young defensive unit that have held their own impressively thus far, especially 18-year-old Louis Bradley and 19-year-old Lee Jenkins.

Following an injury to Sam Barnes in the warm-up away at Penybont, the Seasiders’ backline has often boasted an average age of 19.25!

Foligno, who made his debut in the 2-0 defeat at Connah’s Quay Nomads on Wednesday night, made the switch to Park Avenue from Penrhyncoch, the centre-half club stalwart having spent over 10 years at Cae Baker.

The 39-year-old is a well-known and popular figure in Ceredigion football, having led the Roosters’ backline for over a decade since joining from Penparcau in 2010.

Foligno said: “I’m obviously over the moon to be even considered at my age. It’s been about 15 years since I last played League of Wales football.

“I was probably more likely to not play football again than step up to Welsh Prem with everything that’s going on.”

Reflecting on Wednesday night’s defeat he added: “The game was tough obviously, they are champions and full time professionals so to play my first game in seven months was a baptism of fire.

“The squad all seem great and up for a fight, great to see so many local boys involved who genuinely seem to want to fight for the club and Gav is onto the right idea having a locally-based side with some very talented players from away.

“It was a tough game which the boys battled through all the way but quality showed in the end and we just have to move on quickly to the next games.

“However long I’m involved I’ll be grateful for the opportunity and relish the challenge.”

Despite a resolute defensive showing against the Cymru Premier champions, Aberystwyth returned home empty handed from Deeside.

Aber’s performance drew a lot of plaudits after the game, particularly from opposition boss Andy Morrison who was generous in his praise of the young visiting side and the spirit they showed throughout the game.

Coming into the game on the back of a three match unbeaten run, Aber fell behind 2-0 in the first half through John Disney’s penalty on nine minutes and Aaron Edwards with a smart finish on 28 minutes.

Whilst Gavin Allen’s team will be disappointed to lose only their second match of the season, they can take heart from a brave performance and now look to bounce back on Saturday, when Barry Town United visit Ceredigion.
