IN glorious October sunshine, a 76th-minute header from Lee Hunt was sufficient to earn Bala their first home win on the Maes Tegid 3G pitch - and leave Newtown languishing in bottom spot in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League after three straight losses.
Hunt made no mistake when he back-headed the ball into the net from Kieran Smith’s cross to secure a welcome home win for the Lakesiders.
It was a close encounter in the first half, with the game looking like it could swing either way. Jason Oswell flashed a shot along the face of goal for the Robins with only two minutes, and he also then linked up with Neil Mitchell, but curled wide.
At the other end Chris Venables dipped a free kick narrowly over, and Ryan Valentine delivered a teasing ball into the danger area, which was cleared by Shane Sutton under pressure from Venables.
With Bala getting on top, Ryan Edwards slotted in Keiran Smith on the right but his cross was saved by keeper Dave Jones, and another cross by Valentine was met by Stuart Jones, but his flicked header was also claimed by the visiting shot-stopper.
Further pressure saw Nathan Burke’s corner kick headed over by Stuart Jones, and a link-up between Edwards and Mike Hayes was not capitalised on in the box.
Down the other end, Mitchell pounced on an unconvincing Town clearance and saw his shot deflected out by Stephens.
In injury time before the interval, Bala had the best effort of the half as striker Hunt’s square ball from one end of the box was pulled across to Valentine, whose sweetly struck volley from seven yards out was brilliantly palmed away by Jones.
At half-time, Ian Sheridan replaced Edwards, and Bala remained on top, with an early header from Hunt soaring wide.
Newtown countered with Mitchell crossing low to Luke Boundford, who fired wide when he may have done better.
Venables created an opening for Hayes fire inches wide, and on the hour a looping cross by Connall Murtagh came off the bar.
Bala continued to attack as Hayes, Sheridan and Hunt saw chances cleared away, and Sheridan picked out Hunt, but his chance went straight to the keeper.
Another fine cross by Sheridan found Venables, but the ball was hacked away.
The deadlock was finally broken on 79 minutes when Smith swung in a stunning ball to striker Hunt, who headed home.
Bala looked to double their lead as Hunt headed an wide and Burke went close from 25 yards as Bala breezed to victory.
