GEOFF Kellaway continued his fine scoring form as Aberystwyth Town continued their challenge for a Uefa Europa League play-off spot with a battling 2-1 away victory at Llandudno on Friday night.
After falling behind to a Les Davies goal in first half injury-time, Ashley Ruane levelled matters for the Seasiders, before yet another stunning strike from Kellaway secured three important points.
On a wet evening, Aber kicked off with one change from their win over Carmarthen last time out, with Terry McCormick replacing Adam Walters in goal.
He proved to be a busy man as Llandudno enjoyed long periods of pressure.
Big striker Davies clipped an early shot wide of the target, and a deflected shot from George Harry brought a great stop from Aber’s experienced net-minder.
Aber’s Marc Williams sent in a cute ball, which Ruane glanced against the post, and Kellaway had a shot blocked, but then back came the lively home team. McCormick was up to the task as he came out well to deny first Alun Webb, and then Danny Hughes in a one-on-one.
Aber remained a threat on the counter-attack, and Kellaway released Ruane, but the striker couldn’t quite find the angle. Davies had a shot deflected over for the hosts, but back up the other end a surge from Ryan Wollacott earned Aber a corner, from which Matty Jones found Paolo Mendes’ head, only for keeper Shaun Pearson to hold his goalbound effort.
Hopes of keeping a clean sheet until the interval were dashed, however, as Davies headed home from Sameron Dool’s corner, to put Aber up against it at the break.
The hosts went for a killer second goal after the break to sustain their quest for safety, as Alun Webb curled wide from a good position, and then keeper McCormick did well to catch Harry’s neat lob.
Six minutes after the break, however, Aber hit back when Wes Baynes’ superb deep cross found Ruane at the far post, and he expertly headed in the equaliser.
As the game opened up, Dool was flagged offside before he could put the hosts back in front, before Baynes’ goalbound free kick was tipped over the bar.
Aber were now finding their rhythm and Jones’ corner to the edge of the area was curled wide by Ryan Edwards. Man of the Match McCormick again denied Webb, but midway through the half came the key moment of the match.
Marc Williams found Kellaway down the left, and he unleashed a vicious volley inside Pearson’s near post, for yet another Goal of the Month contender.
In a lovely move, Kellaway then played in Ruane, who squared for Jones in vain.
Llandudno had long periods of pressure, with free kicks and corners galore, but Aber held out stoutly as Declan Walker, Wollacott and Mendes impressed. Ruane nodded another Baynes cross over, but at the other end Mike Pearson and Harry both also headed over the bar.
Kellaway dug out a cross for Williams, who headed wide, but sub Jamie McDaid produced some superb trickery down the right only for the chance to go begging.
Keeper Pearson came up for an injury time corner and was almost caught out as Aber broke, but McDaid’s lob from distance somehow bounced over the bar - but it did not matter, as in-form Aber held out for their fourth win from five.
