BORTH United kept up the pressure on frontrunners Kerry at the top of the Spar Mid Wales League division two as a brace from Liam Lewis earned them a hard-earned 2-1 away win against Abermule.
Mule, with the prolific Dave Anthony and fellow striker Connor Stacey, gave the Crows’ defence a difficult day, with the woodwork coming to Borth’s rescue.
Their pressure paid off when Tommy Jones scored with 10 minutes remaining of the first half, but Abermule were to rue their missed first half chances at the end.
Just 10 minutes into the second half, a serious injury to goal-scorer Jones resulted in the match being stopped while an ambulance was called to treat him.
On the resumption of play Borth seemed to take the initiative, with lone striker Liam Lewis instrumental, and with crosses coming in from both wings it seemed a matter of time before Borth would score.
Liam Lewis obliged with a crisp drive past the keeper, and he did the same moments later to give Borth the three points and revive their pursuit of the league title.
After their festive break, Aberystwyth University made a disappointing return to action in division two as they slipped to a 1-0 home defeat to Churchstoke.
With several of their rivals sidelined by unfit pitches, the students were unable to capitalise as they succumbed to the single winning goal from Max Mclaughlin.
Defeat left the University third from bottom in the table, but with enough games in hand to push into the top half of the table in the second half of the season.
Third-placed Dolgellau shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw away at Builth Wells, where Dominic Thomas scored for the visiting side, and Charlie Boucher for the hosts.
On Friday, Josh Gardner earned Presteigne a 1-1 draw with Newbridge, after Ollie Woods had opened the scoring.
