ANOTHER wholehearted showing earned Penrhyncoch their third win of the campaign in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance when overcoming Flint Town United 1-0 at Cae Baker last weekend.

The Roosters dug deep to claim a notable scalp, with a strike from Liam Lewis early in the second half enough to separate the sides in a hard-fought affair.

Victory, their third in five outings this term, was based on a terrific team effort, and boss Gari Lewis was again full of praise for his team, particularly at how his side dealt with Flint’s aerial threat.

Penrhyn are up to seventh in the table, and journey to Denbigh on Saturday in confident mood to take on a side languishing in the lower reaches of the table. Lewis, however, says his troops cannot afford to drop the high standards they have set so far.

“Denbigh beat Bangor the other week, and any side who can do that will be a threat,” said the Penrhyncoch manager. “We just have to focus on ourselves. Physically we’re looking good, and if we keep our heads, then we will be fine.

“Every week the players are giving me more, they are improving all the time, and I’m immensely proud of them all. Flint are a powerful, physical side with a big aerial threat from set plays and long throws, but we stood up to them magnificently and dealt with the pressure.

“It was a tense game, but as well as defending superbly, we looked dangerous on the counter attack, and had five or six chances in which to kill the game off.”

Flint started well, but Penrhyn carved a good opening on 22 minutes when Liam Doherty did well to find Tom Evans, whose shot was blocked by Aaron Jones.

It needed a fine save from Oli Fairbrother to keep out Kyle Smyth , before captain Sion James cleared the resulting corner. Alieu Sheriff then pounced on a loose ball from a corner, but fired wide through a crowded box, and Smyth lobbed over.

Penrhyn also threatened with James seeing his rising shot clear the bar, but they lost the injured Luke Sherbon a minute before half time, to be replaced by the experienced Antonio Corbisiero.

The hosts got their noses in front six minutes into the second half when Mike Williams attempted a headed clearance, but the ball fell to Liam Lewis, who fired the ball home, beyond debutant Jones.

Flint battled back, with Jack Lewis firing across the face of the goal, but they were kept at bay by another good save from Farebrother, and some resolute defending from Jon Foligno and James.

The one downside was that midfielder Luke Sherbon faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, after tearing a calf muscle. Steff Davies is back running again after his knee cartilage operation, whilst Jonathan Evans and Owain James could both be back in contention for this weekend.
