LLANIDLOES Town’s winning run came to an end after being dumped out of the MMP Mid Wales League Cup with a 3-1 quarter-final defeat at local rivals Caersws last weekend.

Having completed a league double over the Bluebirds, Llani’s hopes of more success failed to materialise after two goals in the first seven minutes from Craig Harris and Rhydian Davies put the Bluebirds on course to win.

Davies got his second from the penalty spot on 75 minutes, and Bluebirds’ keeper Luke Evans superbly saved Connor Bird’s spot kick at the other end, before Llani pulled on a back through sub Peter Rees in injury time.

“We were always in the game,” said Llanidloes manager Hugh Clarke.

“We must have had 70 per cent of the play, but lacked quality in the final third, and their keeper was outstanding. Had we scored earlier, I think we would have got two or three, but it was not to be, and maybe this was the kick up the backsides that we needed.

“The three goals we conceded were poor from us, but we’ll go to Llansantffriad looking to be positive, as you don’t become a bad side overnight.”

Llani were two goals behind inside seven minutes, with Harris slotting the first for the Bluebirds after the ball bobbled over Drew Reynolds, and Rhydian Davies doubled the advantage moments later when glancing home a header from a long throw-in.

There was no way back when Davies made it 3-0 from the penalty spot following a foul in the box by Reynolds.

Substitute Rees was denied by a good save from impressive Caersws keeper Evans, who also pulled off a terrific stop to keep out Bird’s penalty.

Phil Jones then rattled the post for the home side, but Rees did find a way through for a consolation when finishing off from a George Clarke cross.

One positive for Llani was the performance of Harri Clarke in the heart of defence on his return from injury in place of suspended Adam Worton.

Aberaeron’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the MMP Mid Wales League Cup ended when they lost a penalty shoot-out against Builth Wells, after finishing a 2-2 after extra-time.

The hosts had looked to be going through, until a 90th minute equaliser by visiting keeper Stuart Turpin, who smashed the ball home from 30 yards out after a corner had been cleared.

Ifan Burrell and Steffan Gittins had earlier scored in open play for Aberaeron, with Josh Price scoring for Builth, but the visitors went on to win 7-6 on penalties.

Carno booked their place in the semi-finals as goals by Jac Petrie and Richie Evans earned them a 2-1 win over division two leaders Montgomery Town, who scored through Scott Williams.

Berriew put a depleted and youthful Welshpool Town side to the sword to make it to the semi-finals with an emphatic 7-0 win on Friday evening, courtesy of goals from Richard Davies, Charlie Humphreys, Harry Watkins, Joe Haycock, with a brace, Steffan Rogers and Xavier Matisse.
