LLANILAR lifted the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League Cup for the first time in 19 years after a 2-1 extra-time triumph over Tregaron Turfs in the final at Park Avenue on Monday night.
The club’s long wait for the silverware ended as Sion Edwards netted a stunning winning goal, after Ryan Edwards’ opener was cancelled out by Cerith Davies to force the additional half an hour.
Skipper Paul Bonner lifted the trophy to the delight of his teammates and the Llanilar supporters, who have to look back as far as 2000 for the only other time the club has won the District League Cup.
Llanilar, who take on division one champions Penparcau in the final of the Len and Julia Newman Trophy on Monday at Park Avenue, had been pipped to runners-up spot this season by Tregaron.
Yet they went into the League Cup Final in good heart, having signed off their league campaign with a win in Tregaron a few weeks earlier - and the prolific Ryan Edwards opened their account after 25 minutes with a well-taken free-kick.
In a fluctuating opening half, both sides battled hard to gain the upper hand in the midfield battle, but clear scoring chances were limited, and the Turfs were chasing a single goal deficit at the interval.
Ryan Edwards came close to doubling the lead in the second half when his half volley rattled the crossbar, and Llanilar looked to be in control and heading for victory until five minutes from time when Tregaron salvaged a late leveller.
Cerith Davies saw his free kick sneak into the bottom corner of the net for a dramatic equaliser, but moments later Tregaron were reduced to 10 men when Caradog Daniel was shown a red card after a Llanilar player was pushed to the ground.
Llanilar looked to finish the game in normal time and Sion Edwards hit the bar from distance - but extra-time followed with the one man disadvantage proving to be costly in the end for the tiring Turfs.
Sion Edwards made the breakthrough when he picked up the ball around 30 yards out, looked up and hit a stunning strike into the top left corner of the Turfs’ net for a sensational winning goal.
A spirited Tregaron pushed hard for the equaliser, but Llanilar’s resolute defence held firm to maintain their lead and the final whistle sparked scenes of relief and jubilation from the Llanilar team, management and their delighted supporters.
