LLANYSTUMDWY are the solitary local flag-bearers remaining in the FAW Trophy after a tremendous 5-4 success over Meliden on their own ground.
The second round thriller at storm-swept Ffordd Ty Newydd saw prolific scorer Sion Parry net all their five goals.
On 32 goals for the season already, Parry punished Meliden - a Welsh Alliance division two side - with goals on 2 minutes, 45, 59 from a penalty, 83 and crucially, 90-plus-one with the winner.
With time running out, Parry gained possession in midfield, raced forward to the edge of the penalty box and let rip with a scorching drive into the net.
Meliden, who led 2-1 midway through the first half, and 3-2 early in the second period, scored through Ashley New on 32 minutes, Matt Griffiths a minute later and Liam Smith after 75 and 82.
Penrhyndeudraeth had feared they would be up against it, when taking on holders Chirk AAA at their own ground and so it proved in a 5-2 defeat.
Julian Jeffery’s side could not cope with the Wrexham Area League hosts’ Louie Middlehurst, who fired four goals, including a first half hat-trick.
Penrhyn, who reached the competition final in 2015, had hinted at an upset when Richard Jones snatched a fifth minute lead, but Chirk’s take-over came, courtesy of goals from Middlehurst on 10, 25 and 40 minutes and another by Jason Williams on 22 minutes.
Penrhyn kept in contention with a second goal from Steve Jones on 35 minutes but, when the same player was shown a straight red card for a bad tackle on the hour, any lingering prospects of a revival finally disappeared.
Having been 4-2 behind at half-time, Penrhyn went 5-2 down with yet another Middlehurst goal on 65 minutes, as the cup kings proceeded to the last 32.
Pwllheli felt hard done by when their Trophy ambitions were dashed in a 3-2 defeat at Mold area side, New Brighton Villa, who squeezed through because of a disputed extra goal right at the end.
Keeper Gethin Roberts was left exposed by a home breakaway raid, which led to Jordan Dorrington scoring on 90 minutes, from within the box, despite Pwllheli’s protests for offside.
That was the third time for Barry Evans’ men to slip into arrears, after earlier goals from Grant Spencer on 10 minutes and Steve Oarsley after 42.
Pwllheli had hit back twice, gaining replies by Ifan Gwilym on 40 minutes and Llion Bryn Jones on 49, and they coped manfully despite being down to 10 men, after Matthew Hardy had been sent off around the half-hour mark.
Key players were missing, including Lukacs Baltovic and Jason Banks suspended and Tomos Jones injured, while the usually alert strikers Mark Jones and Dylan Sion Jones had little joy.
Conwy Borough, the Welsh Alliance’s division one unbeaten leaders, romped through their Trophy tie at Wrexham side Coedpoeth by a 7-2 margin.
Other away winners were Llanrug United, the 2014 losing finalists, who made it by a 3-0 score at Lex Glyndwr.
Joining them in the third round will be Llangefni Town, after a 3-1 home triumph against Hawarden Rangers.
Four Welsh Alliance clubs were eliminated, notably Nantlle Vale, who finished on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline at Mold Alex, while the other results of interest were Corwen 3 Llannefydd 0, FC Nomads 3 Prestatyn Sports 1, Mynydd Isa Spartans 6 Pentraeth 0 and Rhos Aelwyd 2 Llanberis 0.
Gaerwen versus Greenfield was postponed, because of the bad weather, while Mochdre Sports were left without a match when Dolgellau Athletic reported being unable to raise a team.
