LLANYSTUMDWY’s rewarding run of five straight victories within Gwynedd League circles came to an unexpected end with a 2-1 home defeat to Bro Goronwy.
Having held the Moelfre-based side to a 2-2 draw on their own ground in late August, Aled Jones’s team had hoped for even better in the Dwyfor Park return.
Confidence was enhanced on the half-hour, as Bradley Williams steered the hosts ahead, but Bro Goronwy equalised 10 minutes later through Tyler James, and then snapped up the winner from Andy Williams nine minutes from the end.
Harlech Town went down 5-2 at Aberffraw, whom they had beaten by exactly the same score in the original encounter at the Beach Road venue in early season.
Harlech netted via George Southern and Craig Stewart, but Aberffraw took charge with Gary Bolton’s hat-trick and singles by Adam Hallybone and Andrew Jones.
Nefyn United have lost active involvement in all of the Gwynedd League’s three knockout competitions, after their 4-2 defeat at leaders Bodedern in the Bob Owen Memorial Shield second round.
The visitors from Cae’r Delyn had feared the worst at half-time, when they trailed by two goals, both netted by Bodedern’s Sion Jenkins, on 11 and 26 minutes.
An own-goal by the hosts’ Harri Jones on 55 minutes offered Nefyn a lifeline, but then Bodedern surged 4-1 ahead through Jordan Taylor on 60 minutes and Shane Boylan on 70, before Nefyn’s academic second reply from Guto Roberts on 77.
The outstanding tie of the round featured second-from-top outfit Bontnewydd at home to holders Menai Bridge Tigers, and the outcome was a surprise 6-2 triumph by last season’s trophy winners.
Gareth Barker bagged a brace for Bridge after 13 and 39 minutes, as did Ryan Wood after 25 and 83, along with singles by Tim Evans on 41 and Dave Roberts on 75.
Bontnewydd replied via Rhys Roberts on 44 minutes and Sion Williams on 78.
Talysarn Celts meanwhile achieved progress to the Shield’s semi-finals by winning 3-0 away at Beaumaris Town, thanks to goals from Ian Pleming on 18 minutes and Rhys Jones on 34 and 44.
The remaining tie between Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs’ Reserves and Bethesda Athletic was postponed, because of an unfit pitch at Cae Clyd last weekend.
