MACHYNLLETH were unable to stop Radnor Valley moving up to fourth position in the Spar Mid Wales League division one as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Aberystwyth’s Park Avenuey.

Second half goals by Callum Matthews and Elliot Williams took Radnor’s tally of league wins into double figures, to leave Mach rooted to the bottom of the table.

The decision was made to move this game to the 3G pitch, due to waterlogging problems at Cae Glas, and Mach went into the match in good heart after a goalless draw with fellow strugglers Borth.

In contrast, the New Radnor men have already eclipsed last season’s final points tally, and were riding high after an impressive 1-0 win over leaders Welshpool.

A bright start from the Goats saw Joey Price fire a low 25 yard drive that was comfortably saved, and midfielder Elliot Morris went on a driving run, but pulled his eventual just shot wide of the target.

Having suffered an 8-2 defeat in the reverse fixture, Machynlleth looked a more organised and solid outfit, but Joey Price saw another long range effort saved, before the two teams headed for the changing rooms at the interval still goalless.

Radnor again started the second-half on the front foot, with right back Sam Lloyd delivering a low cross into the penalty area, but Callum Matthews saw his 47th minute effort blocked for an early corner .

Five minutes later, Elliot Morris had a 25 yard shot saved, but at the other end Radnor custodian Will Fowden was challenged for a hanging cross in the 56th minute, and the loose ball was fired wide.

Joey Price was unable to keep an inviting right wing cross from Liam Jones under the crossbar on the hour mark, and Elliot Morris was then denied by the legs of the home goalkeeper three minutes later after another teasing cross from Jones.

An attempted chip by Lewis Morris was saved in the 75th minute, before Radnor broke the deadlock two minutes later.

Joey Price’s low 25 yard drive was spilled by the Magloanians’ custodian and Callum Matthews was hand to force the loose ball over the line from close in.

Price was denied a goal four minutes later, due to an offside flag, but the visitors secured the three points by breaking swiftly from an 88th minute Mach corner.

Elliot Williams was on hand to apply a crucial finish, after neat some interplay with the hard-working Dewi Morris.

• Llanidloes Town also turned up the pressure on the division one pacesetters as they recorded a 2-0 win at Knighton, to move within four points of the leaders.

With several of the leading sides without a game due to the weather, including frontrunners Welshpool Town and second-placed Llanrhaeadr, the Daffs took advantage as they overcame both stubborn opponents and sodden conditions.

George Clarke continued his fine form when firing the Daffs ahead with a cool finish from the edge of the box, and Gareth Owen headed in a second before the interval, from a Matthew Savage free kick.

There was no way back for the Radnor Robins, and Llani also had chances to increase the lead with Rhys Evans being denied when through on goal - before the striker tainted a good performance when being dismissed for his second caution, after kicking the ball away in frustration.

A couple of injuries also marred the win, with defender Harri Clarke pulling a hamstring, while forward Richie Evans went off late in the first half with a gashed shin. Josh Evans also picked up a knock, and Josh Hartrick remains sidelined.
