MACHYNLLETH will travel to Llanrhaeadr in the second round of the Spar Mid Wales League Cup after they notched a hard-earned 2-1 victory at division two outfit Borth United at Uppingham Fields.

In a tense start to the match, both teams created openings, with Ben Jones sliding the ball wide of the post, and Liam Lewis sending a deft lob just inches over the bar for the hosts.

The visitors were on top in the early stages of the second half, and the pressure paid off as Callum Roberts’ header from a corner beat Borth’s keeper, Sean Gates.

The Crows, however, then upped their game and they grabbed an equaliser when Ben Jones crossed from the left wing and Liam Lewis’ header was credited to have crossed the goal line by referee Aled Jones.

In the final minutes, however, Mach restored their lead when Dave Jones’ low shot from outside the box evaded Gates, and looked to have won the tie for Mach.

A last-gasp chance for Borth saw Ben Byrne’s left wing cross met by Sam Middleton, only for his header to hit the post as Mach held on to reach the next round.

Striker Iwan Matthews handed out a lesson in clinical finishing as Aberystwyth University bowed out with a crushing 6-0 first round exit at home to Llanrhaeadr.

Iain Edmunds gave the visitors the lead on 15 minutes, and Matthews then scored after leaving the defence in his wake.

The students had their moments, with Henry Nicholson forcing keeper Connor Lee into a good save, but Llanrhaeadr made it 3-0 right on half time when Tom Evans headed in an Edmunds corner.

Matthews settled the issue in the second half, with the striker finding the net on 53 and 55 minutes to complete his treble.

The University forced some goalmouth scrambles, but were caught on the break when substitute Ryan Broadbent completed the scoring seven minutes from time.

Llanidloes Town crashed out on Friday with a penalty shoot-out defeat against division two side Kerry at Victoria Avenue.

The Daffs had taken the lead early in the second half through Rhys Evans, who fired home following a free kick but, after George Clarke went off through injury on the hour, the home side lost their way.

With just a couple of minutes to go, they lost possession, and Kerry broke up field and a shot from distance by Drew Hughes eluded replacement keeper Jake Brown.

After extra time had failed to separate the sides, the match went down to a penalty shoot-out. Rhys D Evans missed a penalty for Llani, before Mark Probert’s successful kick sealed a 5-3 shoot-out win.

Carno meanwhile beat Presteigne 3-1 on Friday night as a brace from Peter Rees, either side of an Andrew Evans goal, set up a second round tie against Aberaeron.

In a first half of few chances, Rees had seen his shot was from close range parried away, but in added on time Presteigne’s Ashley Griffiths crossed for Matt Strangwood to score from close range.

Ioan Humphreys, Andrew Evans and Steve Jones all hit the woodwork for Carno in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and Rees was also denied after the keeper made a superb save from close in.

The Greens were back on level terms just after the hour as Andrew Evans released Peter Rees to lob home from 20 yards.

Andrew Evans then put them in front when heading past the stranded home keeper from a Ioan Humphreys cross.

Ashley Owen was twice denied by some last ditch defending, but Rees finally killed off the game with just moments to go when he finished off from distance, after being sent through by Jordan Jones.

Elsewhere two goals from Dominic Thomas earned Dolgellau progress with a 2-1 win over local rivals Tywyn/Bryncrug, who had taken the lead after half an hour through a headed effort by Aston Heath.

On the hour, Dennis Bates played the ball to Thomas down the right and from a wide position he fired across the keeper and into the far corner for the equaliser.

Then on 75 minutes a long ball sent Thomas clear, and he poked the ball under the advancing keeper to secure their win.

Goals by Chris Roff, Adam Farmer , Sam Williams and 16 year old Jack Brindley earned Knighton a 4-0 win at Four Crosses, whilst goals from Matt Mumford, Steff Rogers, Jamie Dockerty and Darryl Jones saw Berriew win 4-0 at Llansantffraid.

Elsewhere a 10-man Llandrindod Wells held rivals Builth Wells to a 1-1 draw, before progressing on penalties, whilst Rhayader Town won 4-0 at Newbridge, and Churchstoke beat Welshpool on penalties, after drawing 2-2 after extra-time.

• ABERAERON picked up their fourth win of the season in division one as goals from Gareth Severs and James Hemming sealed a 2-1 win over Radnor Valley, who had scored their goal through Joey Price.
