MACHYNLLETH notched their fifth successive win with a 2-1 home triumph over local rivals Borth United in the MMP Mid Wales League division two on Tuesday evening.
Harry Vince Holt opened the scoring after just 12 minutes with a superb left-footed shot beyond keeper Ben Willis after 12 minutes, and Mach continued to hold the upper hand as the first half progressed.
It was against the run of play that Borth equalised on the half hour as Ryan Davies’ low shot beat Thomas Jenkins and found its way into the bottom corner of the net.
Machynlleth, however, regained the lead 10 minutes before the interval as Charlie Jellett scored with a rasping shot, and Richie Evans - who has rejoined the club from Carno - nearly extended their lead as his free kick rebounded to safety off the post on the stroke of half-time.
Borth upped their game as the second half got underway, but Mach restricted the visitors to only a few half chances and as the match progressed they held firm for a deserved win.
Aberystwyth University meanwhile beat struggling Presteigne 4-2, to notch their second league win of the season at Llanandras Park in their midweek match. The sides were all square at 1-1 at the half-time interval, with Prestiegne’s Duane Anning cancelling out Jonathan Ackroyd’s opening goal for the students.
Tom Crichton put Presteigne ahead in the second half, but that was as good as got for the home side as the students levelled with a great strike by Luc Thomas. The students pushed on and goals from Jason Cotterrall and Pablo De Torres sealed the three points for the visitors.
This weekend’s division two fixtures: Aberystwyth University v Dolgellau; Borth Utd v Dyffryn Banw; Churchstoke v Abermule; Forden Utd vPresteigne; Knighton Town v Machynlleth.
