BOW STREET Reserves took their chance to return to the top of division one as they beat Borth Reserves 3-0 in the only game to go ahead in the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth District League.

A Joe Williams penalty and goals by Osian Rees-Jones and Nicky Smith sealed the win, to move the Magpies above title rivals Bont on goal difference.

The rain and mist greeted the teams for the local derby match, played on Aberystwyth’s 3G pitch at Park Avenue, and both teams adjusted well to the wet conditions as the half progressed.

The Magpies took the lead on 15 minutes when Joe Williams scored from the penalty spot, and the visitors kept up their pressure.

Nicky Smith’s cross from the right wing was palmed away for a corner kick by keeper James Howitt, but Bow Street increased their lead on 25 minutes when the alert Osian Rees-Jones was on hand to convert a cross from the right wing.

Borth’s only chance of note came in the final moments of the half when Scott Wilson’s superb free kick was tipped over the bar by Street keeper Ian Evans.

To their credit, the Crows raised their game as the second half got underway, but generally their half chances were dealt with by a resilient Bow Street defence.

Borth’s hopes of reducing the deficit disappeared on the hour, however, when Nicky Smith’s superbly taken free kick beat keeper Howitt into the top corner of the net, to seal a well-deserved win for Bow Street.

Bont, who now have a game in hand on the Magpies, were left frustrated by the wet weather as their home match against Padarn United was postponed..
