A SUPERB goal by ex-Borth United player Ben Jones ensured that Bow Street ended the year on a high with a 2-1 derby win against his former club in the Spar Mid Wales League division one.
In front of a large holiday crowd at Cae Piod, the visitors almost took an early lead as Ryan Edwards was tripped just outside the penalty area, but the resultant free kick by Clive Morgan was superbly saved by Ben Willis in the Street goal.
Within two minutes the hosts took the lead, however, as Mark Gornall took a quick free kick and Garmon Nutting controlled the ball superbly before beating goalkeeper Alex Pennock.
Despite large amounts of possession, and several chances, the home side were unable to add to their lead.
The second half began with both teams attacking and within 10 minutes Clive Morgan’s snap shot was saved by keeper Willis.
The visitors sensed an equaliser, and when Ryan Edwards’ free kick from the left wing wasn’t dealt with, James Davies’ looping header beat the keeper at the far post to level matters.
The last 20 minutes saw huge amounts of pressure from the home side, and with five minutes left a sublime move involving many players was finished by a spectacular finish by Ben Jones, for what was a deserved but hard-fought win.
Bow Street boss Barry Williams said: “We almost paid for not taking our chances again. But we are delighted to have come through it in the end, and it was brilliant for the boys to play in front of such a large crowd.”
Llanidloes Town finished with nine men as the year ended on a sour note with a 3-2 defeat at Radnor Valley, to dent their title challenge.
Radnor took a fifth minute lead with a 30-yard thunderbolt from Chris Price, and almost added a second when Geraint Lloyd spurned a close range effort.
Llanidloes were back on terms on 28 minutes with a spectacular strike themselves when George Clarke rifled home a terrific 20-yard volley after a corner had been knocked down.
Radnor regained the lead five minutes before the break when Lloyd slotted home a cross by Liam Jones, which then saw Daffs keeper Aaron Warrick sent off for his second booking after pushing the goalscorer.
Substitute keeper Kris Williams made some good saves from Lew Morris and Joey Price to keep Llani in the hunt, before Gareth Owen levelled on 75 minutes when heading home from a Josh Evans cross.
The visitors were well worth a share of the spoils, but a contentious penalty saw Radnor Valley regain the lead five minutes minute from time when Ryan Biggs was ruled to have tripped Joey Price who stepped up to convert the spot kick.
There was more drama a minute later when Llani forward Richie Evans became the second Llani player to be dismissed for his second booking, when being ruled to have raised an elbow.
“It was a disappointing way to finish the year,” said Daffs boss Hugh Clarke.
“The lads did well, and were the better side with 10 men, and deserved something from the game, but some refereeing decisions did not go for us on the day.
“But we’re there or thereabouts, which was our aim at the start of the season.”
The defeat saw the Daffs slip to fourth, eight points adrift of leaders Welshpool Town, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Churchstoke.
Adam Davies netted for Pool, but Aidan Oakley’s goal earned Stoke a point.
Llanrhaeadr looked well placed in second as goals from Iain Edmunds, Tom Bailey and Iwan Matthews earned them a 3-1 win against Berriew, who had netted through Steff Rogers.
Knighton won 2-0 at Llandrindod Wells, courtesy of goals from Tom James and Connor Bird from the penalty spot, whilst the matches between Llanfair and Carno, and Tywyn and Kerry were postponed.
