LEADERS Llanidloes Town were left looking back over their shoulders as their title rivals closed the gap at the top of the MMP Mid Wales League division one.
It remains a four-horse race for the title, with Berriew securing a 1-0 success at Bow Street to close the gap to three points, with three games left.
Joe Haycock’s late winner at Cae Piod settled a very tight encounter of few chances on a dry pitch, to keep the Rhiewsiders well on track.
Meanwhile Tom Powys Richards’ 65th minute winner was just enough to ensure that Caersws moved up to second place, one point off top spot, after prevailing 1-0 at Llandrindod Wells, but they have just one game left.
Llanfair United had no league action last weekend and dropped down to third place, with four games left, just two points off top spot.
Last weekend, Aberaeron moved into seventh place as an Ifan Burrell goal ensured that they won 1-0 at Radnor Valley, who were denied by a couple of fine saves from keeper Oliver Farebrother.
Goals from Brad Rollinson, Joel Metcalf and Jack Hammond meanwhile earned Builth Wells a 3-1 win over Welshpool Town, who replied through Will Thomas.
In division two action, early goals from Adam Williams, Tommy Jones and Jack Jarman, and a fourth from Adam Putson set Abermule up for a 4-2 win over Dolgellau, who replied through Charlie Owen and Sion Lloyd.
A late winner from Gareth Jones earned Four Crosess a 3-2 win over Newbridge-on-Wye, with Jamie Evans with also on the home scoresheet.
Machynlleth drew their final home game as Alex Jarman got the goal in a scrappy 1-1 draw with Rhayader Town, who had opened the scoring through Jack Bright.
In midweek, two goals from Gareth Jones had seen Four Crosses book their place in the ER Jenkins Division Two Cup Final with a 4-1 win over Abermule. Ben Simms and Josh Michael Thomas also netted to secure a place in the final against Rhayader Town.
A youthful and depleted Machynlleth narrowly lost to Dolgellau 6-4 in very testing conditions on Monday night. Having been 3-1 down at half time they came back to lead 4-3, only for Dol to claim the win with two late goals.
Paul Jones, with a brace, Simon Davies and Callum Roberts netted for Mach, but a hat-trick from Owain Williams and singles by David Edwards, Ifan Jones and Sion Lloyd secured the points.CENTRAL WALES SENIOR CHALLENGE CUPLLANIDLOES Town went out of the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup in midweek after suffering penalty heartbreak against Llanrhaeadr in an entertaining semi-final clash at Caersws in midweek.After the tie had finished 3-3 following extra time, the Daffs succumbed in the spot kick showdown as their Cymru Alliance rivals secured progress.The MMP Mid Wales League division one title chasers had taken a two-goal lead through a fine finish from Josh Hartrick and Connor Bird’s penalty.Llanrhaeadr hit back to level matters through Khyam Wyton and Iwan Matthews, before the Daffs restored their lead when Matthew Savage’s corner was deflected into the back of the net.Llan levelled again through Matthews to take the tie into extra time and, with no more goals, it settled 4-3 on penalties in favour of the villagers.The Central Wales Challenge Cup Final will be played between Berriew and Llanrhaeader at Caersws on 4 May.Meanwhile Berriew booked their place in another final with a 4-2 extra-time win over Carno in their semi-final tie in the MP Foulkes Montgomeryshire Cup in Caersws on Wednesday.An own goal and strikes from Harry Watkins, Drew Cook and a Marc Jones penalty finally won the day for Berriew, with goals by Carno’s Andy Evans and Joe Morris forcing extra time.Berriew will take on either Welshpool Town or Llanrhaeadr in the final on this season’s Montgomeryshire Cup.
