DEWI STARS can’t buy a win in the Costcutter Ceredigion League this term, but mention the Emrys Morgan Cup and they spring to life.
After losing heavily to Bargod in the Dai ‘Dynamo’ Davies Cup a few weeks earlier, with most of their squad available they finished strongly by scoring three goals in the last 15 minutes to progress into round four with a 4-1 win over the same opponents.
Bargod took an early lead in the first five minutes when Jayden Lynch latched on to a through ball to outstrip the defence and score.
Stars settled, and after several promising attacks they equalised on the half hour as Daniel Williams curled a terrific free kick around the wall, giving goalkeeper Gethin Davies no chance.
The game hung in the balance until the final 15 minutes as Ryan Hurrell miraculously cleared the ball off the line as Bargod looked certain to retake the lead.
Minutes later, however, a strong run and cross from the left by the Stars’ Liam Jones saw Arwel Jones slide in to finish at the far post.
Soon after it was 3-1 as Arwel Jones again capitalised on a defensive slip on the halfway as Bargod pushed up looking for the equaliser.
He ran half the length of the pitch and found the bottom corner - and in the dying minutes it was 4-1 as man of the match Daniel Williams headed home from a rebound for his second goal to seal victory.
Holders Llandysul were knocked out as Forden United came from behind to claim last-gasp 4-3 victory.
The Swallows, who have lost over half of the side that lifted the trophy last April, were trailing as two goals from Ross Harries gave them a healthy lead in the glue-pot conditions - but the hosts hit back to lead 3-2 thanks to a Josh Baker brace and one from Jesse Clayton.
Llandysul had several chances to kill the game off but the woodwork saved Forden on three occasions, before they hit back with an equaliser by Ryan Jenkins.
Then, with a minute to go, Christian Webster slotted home from close range to put Forden through and deny Llandysul the chance of a third successive Emrys Morgan Final appearance.
Lampeter, winners of this competition in 2014, cruised into round four with a 4-1 win against visitors Meifod.
The Costcutter Ceredigion League leaders were good value for a 1-0 lead at the break, courtesy of Robert Slawkowski, and upped the tempo after the interval.
Front runner Jason Jones bagged a quick fire hat-trick to kill off the opposition off, before Rob Evans grabbed a late consolation for Meifod.
Crannog, who were the beaten finalists two years ago, made a safe passage with a 4-1 win over a depleted Padarn United side.
A Neil Zerk brace, and singles from Robbie Evans and Rhys Davies sealed a deserved win for the hosts.
Padarn, however, produced a spirited performance, with talisman Paul James taking advantage of a quick throw to glide past five Crannog players and hammer home an equaliser, to go in 1-1 at half time.
Harry Davies netted the winner as Four Crosses beat Waterloo Rovers 1-0, whilst goals from Dave Ash and Austen Oliver earned Newtown Wanderers a 2-1 win over Llanidloes Reserves, Josh Matthews replying.
Two goals by Jamie Evans and singles by Cameron Mills, Mark Wozencroft and Mattie Lewis earned Rhayader a 5-4 extra time win over Guilsfield Reserves.
In second round action, Knighton Town Reserves hit back from two goals down to beat Penrhyncoch Reserves by 3-2, with goals from Billy Hyett and Scott Davies, who netted a brace.
Two Jodeci Dean strikes not enough as Caersws Reserves bowed out 3-2 to Newcastle, with Carl Price scoring twice and Matthew Jones once for the visitors.
Meanwhile Ashley Davies netted an extra time winner as Llanfair Reserves beat Abermule Reserves 1-0.
