PENRHYNDEUDRAETH got their new campaign in the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance division one off to a winning start under new manager Mike Foster with 3-2 away win at Glantraeth.
Victors over the Anglesey side in the Mawddach Cup Final last season, Penrhyn again prevailed, thanks ultimately to Jack Davies’s goal six minutes from the end.
Glantraeth, invariably a strong outfit, posed problems for Penrhyn in the first half, but Foster’s side grabbed the lead on 36 minutes through Meilir Williams, who bundled the ball over the line in a scramble.
Penrhyn were forced on to the defensive early in the second spell by more Glantraeth pressure, which yielded the equaliser from Jamie Roberts on 50 minutes and the 2-1 lead-taker by the same player on the hour.
Meilir Williams pounced again for Penrhyn on 66 minutes, with a deflected volley, and it was anyone’s game from then to the 84th minute, when the visitors’ Davies netted the decider.
Pwllheli performed well against Llanrwst United, but had limited reward in a goal-less draw, which featured an array of chances.
The hosts’ Jamie Underwood scraped the bar from 25 yards, Tom Mahoney tested Llanrwst keeper Adam Redrup, as did Mark Jones, and Tomos Jones and Michael Williams both went close in the opening half.
Mark Jones was denied by Redrup’s feet early in the second half, after which Mahoney slammed against the woodwork from 20 yards on the hour and newcomer Iwan Gwilym did likewise from long range late on.
Llanrwst, who battled doggedly, featured Leighton Griffiths as their rock in defence and what threats they created up front were repulsed by Pwllheli’s capable keeper Gethin Roberts.
Barmouth and Dyffryn United, appearing for the first time on their upgraded Wern Mynach pitch, after major drainage works in mid-summer, were not too dejected at the opening day’s 2-0 defeat, especially considering the opposition.
Llangefni Town, third-placed last season, and likely title contenders again, plundered goals in the second half, early and late, on 50 minutes by Gary Jo Owen and on 86 by Craig Evans, both from close range.
Barmouth, who had three new signings on view – keeper Ceirion Hall, Elwyn Edwards in central defence and Chris Wilkins in midfield – matched their capable opponents at most times with lots of attractive play.
Standing out, notably in the goal-less first half, were Carwyn Jones in defence and Shane Jones in attack, but scoring chances all through were rare. Wilkins shot straight at the keeper, but Barmouth were frustrated with a blank score sheet.
Elsewhere an Asa Thomas goal earned Trearddur Bay United a 1-0 win at promoted Greenfield, while runners-up Llandudno Junction lost at Llanrug United 4-3 to home goals by Dylan Owen, Gethin Phillips and Alan Mark Owen, plus an own-goal. James Hobson, Merick Knight and Curtis Cooper netted the replies.
Guto Llewelyn netted an 88th minute equaliser as Llanberis and Glan Conwy drew 3-3, after early goals from Gerald Laidlaw, from the spot and Llion Jones.
Kyle Moore, Anthony Wilson and Anthony Wilson had turned the tables for Glan Conwy.
Abergele and Nantlle Vale were also inseparable in a 1-1 deadlock, the scorers being Allan Jones for the home side and Jack Pierce for the Penygroes visitors on 49.
