ABERYSTWYTH Town FC bid a fond farewell to the turf at Park Avenue as former managers Meirion Appleton and Tomi Morgan returned to take charge of two teams, made up of club legends, ex-players and supporters.

Playing legends such as Donald Kane, Kevin Morrison, Glyndwr Hughes, Ken Williams, Mark Devereux, Gavin Allen, Andy Evans and Richard Morgan - and some Aber legends of another kind - rolled back the years to grace the pitch one last time on a very memorable night on Friday.

Selection was done exactly as in the school playground, with players picked one by one, and it was Meirion Appleton’s side who made a blistering start as three of Aber’s greatest goal-scorers, Gavin Allen, Glyndwr Hughes and Kevin Morrison all found the net in front of the Dias Stand.

At the other end, Andy Evans reduced the deficit for Tomi Morgan’s men, and Iwan Roberts rounded Tony Brauer to make it 3-2 at half-time.

The boys in blue continued their remarkable turnaround after the break with Huw Bates equalising from close range, and Aberystwyth legend Donald Kane then reminded supporters of his skills as he smashed home a classy volley to make the scoreline 4-3.

Roberts notched two more goals, one set up by a swash-buckling 70 yard run by keeper Richard Morgan, but back came Appleton’s side with two more goals, the second a penalty brilliantly dispatched by Gavin Allen.

Morgan’s men, however, held on to leave the field to rapturous applause, and bragging rights in the club, in a fitting farewell to the Park Avenue pitch.Club Media Assistant Matthew Wallace has produced this video report:
