NEFYN United’s ongoing quest for silverware in three knockouts continued as they secured their passage into the Safeflue Shield Final with a 3-2 extra-time win over Llangoed, to set up a showdown clash with Gwalchmai.
The Cae’r Delyn semi-final remained goalless up to half-time, although Nefyn looked the more potent force and produced several worthy attempts to test Llangoed’s keeper Rhys Owen.
Barely a minute into the second half, however, Nefyn suffered the shock of falling into arrears when Mark Dunn had the misfortune to deflect a Llangoed corner kick into his own net.
Within two minutes, though, the home team were back on level terms, thanks to Meical Williams, and then Dunn atoned for his earlier mishap by scoring at the right end on 65 minutes.
Llangoed’s Karl Pritchard equalised on 68 minutes, making the situation 2-2, and, with no further scoring at either end, the tie moved into extra-time and that brought about a dramatic 119th minute winner for Nefyn.
In the frenzied finale, home attackers hammered three rapid-fire attempts towards the Llangoed target and the last shot from sub Ifan Jones was a simple tap-in from a few yards out, which sparked wild celebrations.
It was a significant win for Nefyn, who have not appeared in a final for eight years, the last time being in 2010 when they won the Safeflue Shield.
Meanwhile, in the Bob Owen Memorial Shield’s second round, Beaumaris Town caused an upset by beating league high-fliers Bontnewydd 2-1 on their own ground, courtesy of goals from Dean Redmond on eight minutes and Ben Roberts’s decider on 83, with Rob Daniels replying on 55.
Waunfawr were also away winners in the cup, going through to the semi-final by the same 2-1 scoreline at Menai Bridge, thanks to Ioan Gwynedd’s strikes on 53 and 63 minutes that nullified Colin Parry opening goal on 45.
In the league, Llanystumdwy completed a home-and-away double over Talysarn Celts by dominating 3-0 at Dwyfor Park, with goals by Rob Griffith on 45 minutes and Sion Parry on 50 and 60, the latter from a penalty.
Holyhead Town have taken over as the league leaders, deposing Bro Goronwy by beating them 4-0 at their Moelfre ground, with goals by Jordan Murphy on 38 minutes, Shaun Davies on 68 and 89, and Asa Thomas on 87.
