NEFYN United’s bold ambition to recapture the North Wales Coast Junior Cup, which they raised in triumph two seasons ago, was shattered by a thrilling 4-3 defeat against visitors Llysfaen in their third round clash.

The Cae’r Delyn side, who had gone nine matches unbeaten, went out fighting, after clawing their way back from being four goals down with a quarter of an hour left.

The Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League’s undefeated leaders were 3-0 up at the half-time interval, with all their goals being scored by Sean Sheridan, after 18, 39 and 44 minutes.

The same player added the seemingly conclusive fourth on 69, but Nefyn produced a storming finish late on to give themselves a chance of cup progress.

Joint player-boss Steve Jones sparked the recovery with the first reply goal on 76 minutes, and he then found the target again on 87, before Dylan Sion Jones squeezed in the third goal in injury time - but the hosts ultimately ran out of time.

Talysarn Celts emerged as rousing 6-4 winners over hosts Mountain Rangers as they featured a hat-trick by Gerwyn Williams, along with single goals from Luke Baum, Gwyn Thomas and Gavin Davies.

The hosts made a game of it, however, with goals by Declan Williams, with a brace, Simon Kay and Terry Watkinson.

Menai Bridge Tigers earned the right to visit Talysarn in the fourth round when they beat Arriva Bangor 4-0 at the Treborth ground, with goals from Callum Davidson on 15 and 72 minutes, Ryan Owen on 70 and Gareth Barker on 76.

Caergybi lost 7-1 at Abergele Town, where Gary Jo Owen’s goal on 80 minutes was scant consolation, as against the home team’s crop from Jack Hoult, with a brace, Jack Lloyd Williams, Dominic Holland, Sam Ashton, James Hay and Chris Davies.

The tie between Trearddur Bay Bulls and hosts Llandudno Amateurs was postponed for a second time, due to an unfit pitch, and is rescheduled for this coming Saturday, but switched to Trearddur Bay.

NWCFA quarter-final draw: Abergele v Llangoed & District; Llansannan v Llandudno Amateurs Res or Trearddur Bay Bulls; Llysfaen v Bangor 1876; Talysarn Celts v Menai Bridge Tigers. Ties to be played Saturday, 7 March, 1.30pm.<Welsh League (Wrexham Area)

THE wet weather wreaked havoc again last weekend with 15 games off in the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area), including Llanuwchllyn’s Premier Division match at home against Rhostyllen.

Ten-man Holywell Town recorded a 1-1 draw away at FC Queen’s Park to return to the league summit on goal difference.

Park enjoyed the ideal start when in the first minute Rhys Hughes chased down a back pass to the keeper. Mike Platt’s attempted clearance only ricocheted off the chasing striker towards the goal and Hughes was able to prod the ball home.

Holywell, however, then levelled matters when Danny Dobbins beat a couple of players, reached the byline and he fed the ball low across to Jake Cooke to fire home into the bottom corner of the net.

The last action of the first half saw Tony Roebuck sent off for a second yellow card, but there were no further goals as defences held firm in the second half.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division Andy Noonan scored a hat-trick as Brymbo swept aside Plas Madoc 5-0 at The Crick, along with debut goals from the experienced Carl Lamb, and Liam Crisp.

Penycae notched a 2-0 win at Rhos Aelwyd, with goals from Lloyd Ellams and Dom Dohert, while Saltney Town beat Castell Alan Colts 2-0 with second half goals from Ben Evans and Paul Johnson.

In division one, only one game survived as New Brighton Villa notched a 4-1 win at Johnstown, courtesy of first half goals from Steve Orsler, with a brace, Chris Lucas and James Beck - whilst the hosts’ response came from a Sam Jones own goal.

In the Reserves Division, Gresford eased to a 5-0 win over Cefn Druids, with goals from Jack Jones, Jake Eyre, Danny Holland and Joe Chaplain with a brace.

Cefn Mawr beat Saltney 4-3 courtesy of doubles by Ryan Williams and Kurt Isaac, with the visitors scoring via Dan Roberts, Owen Ashton and an own goal.

Llay Welfare Colts defeated Johnstown 4-1 with goals from Oscar Tami, James Towey, Matt Grundy and Jack Edwards, whilst Brymbo won 4-0 at Bala Town, with goals from Liam Massey, with a brace, Kenny Davies and Gareth Poole.
