NEFYN United missed out on silverware again when they were beaten 3-1 by Bro Goronwy in the final of the Gwynedd League’s Bob Owen Memorial Shield.

Three weeks after losing 2-1 to Gwalchmai in the Safeflue Shield Final at Porthmadog, Chris Jones’ team suffered heartache at Caernarfon’s Oval ground.

Tristan Parry raised their hopes with a glorious 30-yard effort on 25 minutes, but Bro Goronwy manager Lee Potter’s half-time team talk must have worked wonders, as a stunning transformation after the interval guided Bro to the silverware.

They equalised barely a minute into the second half through Taylor Jones, and then man-of-the-match Jac Thomas sealed victory for the Gwynedd League title runners-up with goals on 56 and 67 minutes.

Nefyn had settled in the match better and soon were winning the key battles of the final, and Tristan Parry’s screaming strike was good enough to win any final.

Picking up the ball wide on the right, he moved inside and steadied himself well, before striking his 35 yard rocket, sweet as a nut, into the top corner of the net.

Earlier, Mark Dunn and Daniel Roberts had seen early sighters for Nefyn, but Bro’s Jac Thomas went so close, and Dan Fairhead pounced onto through ball to side foot past Alan Jones, only to watch the ball go the wrong side of the post.

Rob Tiesteel’s short back pass nearly put keeper Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes in trouble, but was able to scramble clear and Bro rode their luck in clearing the next free kick as Nefyn applied the pressure.

Sweetser-Hawkes was alert to parry Mark Dunn’s effort around the post and Jones at the opposite end was quick off his line to deny Carwyn Williams as Nefyn went in at the break with a slender lead.

It was like a different team had re-emerged from the Bro Goronwy dressing room for the second half, and Dan Fairhead immediately found Taylor Jones, who didn’t hang about in finding the bottom corner of the net within a minute.

Momentum now changed as Potter’s men took charge, and Connor Jones’ pace nearly gave Bro the lead - but then on 56 minutes the comeback was complete.

Taylor Jones this time assisted Jac Thomas, as the youngster’s right foot did the business, sending the ball through the defenders’ reach into the bottom corner.

Thomas so nearly struck again soon after, turning on the after-burners to reach the ball before the out rushing keeper, only for the custodian to block, but Taylor Jones was unable to execute the rebound.

It was game set and match on 67 minutes as Thomas did bag his second of the night, in typical no-nonsense fashion.

Carwyn Williams set up Connor Jones’ pacey run to feed Jac Thomas inside a crowded box, where the young striker still found time and space to flick the ball up a couple of times, before firing his volley through the defence for 3-1 - and Bro captain Dylan Jones had the honour of lifting the Bob Owen Memorial Shield.

Nefyn retain one last chance of winning a trophy this season, as they await the North Wales Coast Junior Cup final, which has been delayed by an ongoing dispute that has been referred to the FAW.

The clubs involved are quarter-finalists Bontnewydd and Valley, with Gwalchmai on standby to face one or other in the semi-final - as Nefyn await in the final.
