NEFYN United celebrated their greatest triumph in almost two decades when capturing the coveted North Wales Coast Junior Cup, with two late goals securing an 4-2 extra-time win against Bontnewydd.

A hat-trick by man of the match Mark Dunn sealed a thrilling win for Nefyn as they made it third time lucky, after defeats in the finals of both the Safeflue Shield and the Bob Owen Memorial Shield.

The dramatic final, played at Bethesda Athletic’s Meurig Park, was nearing the end of extra time when Chris Jones’ battling side plundered two crucial last-gasp goals in the concluding five minutes.

The Gwynedd League rivals had been deadlocked at 2-2 after 90 minutes played, during which Nefyn had shaped as the more effective performers, without translating their dominance into enough goals.

Guto Roberts was thwarted by Bont keeper Carl Jones early on, but within minutes Nefyn fell into arrears in bizarre circumstances, when Morgan Roberts flighted a huge free-kick from the centre circle within his own half of the field.

United’s keeper Alun Williams, standing in for the unavailable regular Dafydd Jones, was taken by surprise as the swerving ball sailed into the net for a freak goal.

Subsequent possession and pressure by Nefyn in the first half looked promising, but they failed to gain their rewards and they remained 1-0 down at the interval.

Ten minutes into the second period, Nefyn did manage to claw back to parity, thanks to Mark Dunn’s goal, but the Cae’r Delyn side were then plunged into arrears again, at 2-1 down, after 71 minutes.

Bont’s Aled Steele produced a cross-come-shot from the right wing for Nefyn’s Gwion Roberts to miscue with a diving header into the back of his own net.

Nefyn again began to create chances with Guto Roberts and Dunn looking threatening, but just three minutes of the 90 remained, when Nefyn conjured up the vital equaliser to force an extra half-hour, and this was another Dunn special that was driven into the net from a free-kick.

During extra-time, Nefyn continued to look the more likely winners, especially with Bontnewydd flagging, but the sought-after double whammy came late.

On 115 minutes, Guto Roberts in the centre latched on to Dunn’s cross from the left to put his team ahead for the first time in the match, and then Nefyn’s crucial fourth goal followed from Dunn again, from another set-piece on 119 minutes.

Bont keeper Jones came racing out of his 18-yard area as Roberts gave chase and handled the ball. Jones was shown a second yellow card and from the free kick Dunn completed his hat-trick, to clinch Nefyn first Junior Cup triumph since 2000.

This was the last match of the 2017/18 North Wales season, with the showpiece having been delayed due to a protest from Bontnewydd that Valley had fielded a suspended player in their 3-2 quarter-final victory over the Caernarfon-area side.

The appeal was eventually won by Bont, who had only played their semi-final, a 2-0 win over Gwalchmai, last Wednesday.

Just a few weeks ago, in this season’s Gwynedd League campaign, Nefyn had suffered morale-sagging set-backs in two cup finals, losing the Safeflue Shield to Gwalchmai 2-1 after extra-time at Porthmadog and in the Bob Owen Memorial Shield to Bro Goronwy 3-1 at Caernarfon.

Meanwhile Holyhead Town were crowned as the Gwynedd League Champions, with Bro Goronwy the runners-up at the end of an action-packed season.
