NEFYN United now face the challenging prospect of visiting Gwynedd League leaders Felinheli in the Meditel Cup’s semi-final, as reward for a dramatic 4-3 local derby win over Llanystumdwy.

The second round thriller at Cae’r Delyn swung to and fro, and had the visitors looking good when 2-0 up in the first half - but Nefyn came storming back in the second period, before the tie was settled late on by Dylan Sion Jones for the hosts.

Nefyn’s captain for the day pounced on 82 minutes to power home the winning header from six yards, making good use of Dafydd Jones’s right-wing cross.

Llanystumdwy, who had gone into the action boosted by a successful run of 10 matches for only one defeat, shaped promisingly again, with goals from Sion Parry on 15 minutes and Sion Jones on 35.

Then one of the tie’s turning points occurred, when Llanystumdwy’s goalkeeper Caron Hughes sustained a gashed leg and he had to withdraw from the action, before being taken to hospital for stitches.

Youngster Morgan Griffiths was the replacement between the posts, but he was beaten within two minutes by Nefyn’s first claw-back goal from Ifan Jones, followed by Dafydd Jones’s penalty conversion on 44 minutes, making the score 2-2.

The pulsating exchanges continued after the break, as Gwyndaf Parry’s home side secured the lead at 3-2, courtesy of Dylan Jones scoring after 58 minutes.

As the tension reached its climax in the closing stages, Llanystumdwy levelled matters when Sion Parry netted again on 80 minutes, but soon after teammate Kyle Williams was sent off for a rash tackle.

Nefyn punished the 10-men decisively seven minutes from the end with that crucial deciding goal from Dylan Jones, to emerge as marginally the better side on the day - and cup semi-final qualifiers.

• Harlech Town put up a stirring show on their visit to Gwynedd League opponents Waunfawr, only to concede two goals in the closing quarter to lose 3-1.

Waunfawr had opened the scoring through Ioan Gwynedd’s goal on 15 minutes, but Harlech replied through Darren Parry on the hour, before the hosts took charge with late extras from Guto Llewelyn on 74 and Shaun Roberts on 82.

Leaders Felinheli opened up a gap of four points with the spoils from a 4-1 home win over Beaumaris, the scorers being Griff John on nine minutes, Iwan Owen on 37 and 37 and Aled Emyr on 68.

Menai Bridge Tigers beat Bangor University 4-3, which made it a bitter sweet experience for the students’ Martin Marshall, who achieved a hat-trick, with goals on 35, 77 and 82 minutes, only to finish on the losing side. The Tigers roared thanks to Guy Hughes netting after 11 minutes, Tim Evans on 27, Darren Lewthwaite on 46 and Ricky Roberts on 52 minutes.
