EARLY and late goals secured Nefyn United the points in a 2-0 derby win over local rivals Harlech Town, to improve their mid-table standing within the Gwynedd League last weekend.

Rhys Williams took only six minutes to open the Cae’r Delyn hosts’ account but, after that, Harlech kept in contention right up to the 71st minute, when Dylan Sion Jones doubled the home team’s authority.

Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs Reserves are propping up the table after nine straight defeats, but they gave their all in a rip-roaring Cae Clyd clash with Talysarn Celts, which produced a remarkable 6-5 away win.

The home side, who led 1-0 early on and then 3-2 at half-time, were anticipating their first point of the season with the score at 5-5 until the 87th minute, but Talysarn’s Ian Pleming then plundered the winning goal.

Blaenau’s scorers were John Jones, with a hat-trick in vain after 10, 35 and 44 minutes, Dylan Davies on 57 and Adam Davies on 74 minutes.

Celts had netted efforts from Morgan Terfel on 28 and 50 minutes, Pleming with his first on 30, Cai Thomas on 52 and Gavin Davies on 70.

Llanystumdwy were meanwhile on the receiving end of the day’s biggest shock, when going down 6-2 against the league’s former regular whipping boys Beaumaris Town, at their adopted base at Bangor City’s 3G pitch.

A first minute goal for Llanystumdwy by Thomas Williams was soon scrubbed out by the rampant hosts and all that the away side managed later was a token reply from Sion Parry on 81 minutes from a penalty.

Beaumaris’ barrage of goals was inflicted by Dean Redmond with a treble on nine, 26 and 45 minutes, Ricky Roberts on 19, Darren Ishmael on 33 and Scott Hughes on 54 minutes.

The league’s match-of-the-day between leaders Bodedern Athletic and unbeaten second-placed Bontnewydd meanwhile ended in a 2-2 deadlock, with honours and points shared.

On target for Bodedern were Matthew Jones on 23 minutes and Shaun Jenkins on 68, whereas Bontnewydd had their goals from Aled Steel on 21 and Aled Roberts on 82 minutes, but the visitors also wasted a penalty.

Bro Goronwy were another team on scoring form, on a day of goals galore, when they registered a 6-2 win over struggling Bethesda Athletic.

The Moelfre side found the target through Aled Jones on 35 minutes, Andrew Williams on 51 and 85, Jack Thomas on 74 and 87 and an own-goal on 53 minutes, while Bethesda’s marksmen were Greg Parry on 27 and Mark Williams on 77 minutes.

Just one goal was scored in the match between Menai Bridge Tigers and Aberffraw and that arrived very late on, with the away team’s Ricky Roberts achieving the overdue breakthrough a minute from the end.
