LLANUWCHLLYN Reserves suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat to Llay Welfare Reserves in the first round of the NEWFA Reserve Cup despite producing an impressive first-half display.

The visitors faced a difficult challenge from the outset, with the match switched to Llay's youth pitch. The condition of the surface made it clear that Llanuwchllyn would be unable to play their usual passing game.

Even so, Llan started brightly and quickly settled into the contest, enjoying plenty of possession and looking comfortable defensively. Their positive approach was rewarded with the opening goal, scored in fine style by Gwydion Ifan.

A long clearance from goalkeeper Hari Jones was only partially dealt with by the home defence, allowing Ifan to take control. The forward showed excellent composure, bringing the ball down superbly before driving a precise finish into the bottom corner.

Llay, an experienced and physical side, posed a threat in aerial duels and competed fiercely throughout, but Llanuwchllyn fully deserved their half-time lead after creating several promising opportunities.

The visitors, however, struggled to maintain those standards after the break. Loose passing, poor clearances and a lack of communication gradually allowed Llay back into the match and gave the hosts renewed belief.

The turning point arrived in the 66th minute when Llay were awarded a highly controversial penalty. Thomas Edwards made no mistake from the spot, levelling the scores and shifting the momentum firmly in the home side's favour.

From that point, Llanuwchllyn's slick and confident football disappeared as Llay took control. With the tie seemingly heading towards a penalty shootout, disaster struck for the visitors in the closing stages.

A defensive lapse resulted in another spot-kick for the hosts, this time with little argument over the decision. Thomas Wells calmly converted to put Llay ahead after 90 minutes.

Five minutes of stoppage time gave Llanuwchllyn one final chance to force penalties and they pushed forward in search of an equaliser. A good opportunity came their way, but Llay's defence stood firm.

It was a disappointing afternoon for Llanuwchllyn, who will feel they let the match slip from their grasp after such a strong opening 45 minutes.
