PENPARCAU are set to take their place in the final of the Emrys Morgan Cup after last week’s semi-final victors, Bishops Castle, were thrown out of the competition.
The Shropshire club had notched a 3-1 win over the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League leaders at Caersws in midweek, but a complaint was made to the Central Wales FA that they played an ineligible senior player in the tie.
Castle, who play in the Montgomeryshire Amateur League division one, have confirmed that they have now been eliminated from the competition.
Penparcau, who were winners of the competition in 2008, are targeting four trophies this year, and take on St Dogmaels in the final.
“It’s with great regret that we can confirm that we have been eliminated from the 2019 Emrys Morgan Cup at the semi-final stage due to fielding an illegible player,” said a club spokesperson.
“Whilst we had made enquiries on signing the player back in October 2018, it would appear we were given inaccurate information, and that he had actually played in more than five games at a senior level, which breaches competition rules.
“We’ve not intentionally set out to deceive the competition or Clubs involved, with the player being named on all the team sheets and featuring in every league and cup game since his signing last October, which included from the second round of the Emrys Morgan competition.
“We, as a club, would like to wish Penparcau all the best in the final against St Dogmaels on Good Friday.”
St Dogmaels, who are the Costcutter Ceredigion League leaders, had reached the final in a penalty shoot-out with Lampeter in midweek, after their semi-final tie had ended goalless after extra-time at Parc Emlyn.
Remarkably, the Costcutter Ceredigion League has been represented in each of the last nine Emrys Morgan Cup finals, with Newcastle Emlyn being the current holders. St Dogmaels, who were the winners of the trophy back in 1995, were also recently runners-up in 2012 and 2013.Penparcau will be become the first club from the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League to be represented in an Emrys Morgan Cup final since 2013, when Borth United lifted the trophy.
