PENPARCAU won the Emrys Morgan Cup for the second time in their history with a 3-0 victory over Costcutter Ceredigion League champions St Dogmaels at Cae Baker on Good Friday.

After a goalless first half, Ben Davies opened the scoring around the hour, and two goals from Mathew Davies ensured a memorable victory for the 2008 winners of the competition.

It was a cruel blow for the hard-working Saints, who were winners of the silverware back in 1995, but they have now missed out in three Emrys Morgan Cup finals in the past decade.

St Dogmaels had gone into the match in good heart, having beaten Penparcau 2-1 in their Cwpan Coffa Dai ‘Dynamo’ Davies quarter-final tie some four weeks earlier.

Penparcau had been awarded their place in the final after Bishops Castle, who had beat them 3-1 in their semi-final tie, were thrown out for fielding an ineligible player.

There was no doubting their credentials, however, having already accounted for Llanidloes Town Reserves, Trewern United, Padarn United and Guilsfield Reserves in previous rounds.

In front of a bumper crowd at Penrhyncoch, they started with real intent and Saints’ keeper Carl Woodhouse made some crucial saves to keep his side in it, including a superb effort to deny Nathan Warren.

St Dogmaels also had their chances with Adam Williams seeing a free kick rattle the bar, and the Pembrokeshire outfit also had an effort ruled out for a marginal offside.

The Saints had more than their fair share of possession, but central defender Neil Evans stood tall and goalkeeper Dan Pritchard also did well to frustrate a side that was still unbeaten in the league.

The deadlock was finally broken when an attempted clearance was charged down by Ben Davies, who picked his spot, and then Mathew Davies netted twice more to secure the coveted trophy.

Penparcau skipper Andrew Gittins lifted the silverware, and the Cambrian Tyres title favourites are now targeting the treble, having also reached the final of this year’s Newman Memorial Trophy.

That final is against Llanilar on 20 May at Park Avenue.
