A LAST-GASP strike by Jonathan Evans extended Penrhyncoch’s unbeaten run to six games in the HG Cymru Alliance with a gutsy 1-1 draw against Welsh Cup quarter-finalists Guilsfield at Cae Baker.
The Guils had gone ahead through James Henderson’s header in the 13th minute, but the Roosters - despite having Owain James sent off late in the opening half - salvaged a point right at the death.
They have now lost just once in 10 games, including the midweek 4-2 Central Wales Cup win over Machynlleth.
Despite slipping one place to 11th, they are six points clear of a congested bottom four that is separated by just one point.
They now look to keep the run going at home to lowly-placed Ruthin, whom they have already defeated twice this season.
Penrhyn boss Gari Lewis was full of praise for his side, after they had secured a valuable point, despite having Owain James harshly dismissed for two bookings within 45 seconds late in the first half.
“He should never have had the first yellow card for questioning a decision, which was within his right, but then got a second for a rash challenge,” said Lewis.
“To lose him was a real blow. There was some inept refereeing throughout for both sides, but I was really proud of the lads.”
Once they went a player down, the Roosters changed to a 3-4-2 formation, looking solid at the back, while showing plenty of energy in the heavy conditions to push for a leveller late in the game.
Lewis said: “Being down to 10 men, we needed to keep it tight and stay in the game. Considering we had a tough game on a heavy pitch against Machynlleth in midweek, the lads looked strong and showed great fitness levels, and it was a fully deserved point for us. Keeping the two lads up front was a brave decision.
“The players can take a lot of credit, but there’s still plenty of work to do, and we still need at least another three wins.”
Owain James will be suspended for Saturday’s meeting with Ruthin, but Gareth Mansell and Sion Meredith, both unused subs last weekend, are in contention.
James Henderson had given the Guils an early lead when heading home bravely after a set piece had been nodded back at the back post by Robbie James.
Despite down to 10 men, Penrhyn stormed forward late on with Jonathan Evans and Antonio Corbisiero both denied by good saves from keeper Lee Andrew, and sub Liam Doherty hit the post.
They finally earned their reward in the closing moments when they worked their way into the penalty box and the ever-alert Evans smashed home the loose ball.
• In midweek Penrhyncoch overcame Machynlleth 4-2 in the Central Wales Cup fourth round, with Antonio Corbiesiero scoring two penalties while Jon Foligno and Sion James also netted to set up a tie with Llanrhaeadr in the last eight. Kam Sandy and Drew Page netted for Mach.
