PENRHYNCOCH gave themselves a timely boost in their fight for Huws Gray Cymru Alliance survival after pulling off a terrific 3-2 win at Holyhead Hotspur.
It was a stirring effort, with the Roosters twice levelling in the first half through a Jonathan Evans brace, before Stef Davies bagged what proved to be winning goal on the hour.
Victory lifted the Roosters eight points clear of closest rivals Caersws, who have three games in hand, with the two sides set to meet at Cae Baker in a crunch clash next Wednesday, 7 March.
Before then is a tricky trip to Ruthin Town on Saturday, and manager Gari Lewis will be looking for the same kind of display that earned his side a crucial three points in Anglesey.
“The lads were immense, and they fully deserved the win,” commented Lewis.
“We had to dig in for the first 30 minutes, but we dominated the second half.
“We had some big players back, which made a big difference, and to win on the road like this is a big boost.”
While the whole team impressed last weekend, Sion James and Jon Foligno were rock-like figures in the heart of the defence, with Carwyn Jones and Liam Lewis running tirelessly in midfield.
With Stef Davies linking well up front with Jonathan Evans, who was back to his best, Penrhyn showed they can be a match for anyone.
Liam Doherty is back in contention for Saturday’s game after his success with the FAW Academy team, but doubt surrounds the availability of Liam Lewis.
Penrhyn made the worst of starts in Holyhead by going behind after just four minutes with an own goal from Cledan Davies, who headed a cross into his own net as he attempted to clear.
Evans levelled on 35 minutes when latching onto a through ball to finish well, but John Littlemore restored Hotspur’s advantage three minutes before the break.
Evans again levelled the scores just before the interval when converting after Stef Davies had headed on a Cledan Davies free kick
Stef Davies, now back to fitness, popped up for a fitting winner after the break when producing some Gazza-like skill to rifle home his volley, after the ball had spun up high in the air as he broke into the penalty box.
With Hotspur down to 10 men following the dismissal of Dan McGuiness for a dangerous tackle, the Roosters safety navigated the last 20 minutes to return with a crucial three points.
