PENRHYNCOCH were unable to repeat their league win over Prestatyn Town a fortnight ago as the JD Cymru North leaders reached the last 16 of the JD Welsh Cup with a 2-1 win at Cae Baker.

It was a very committed performance from Gari Lewis’ men, but Danny Davies did the damage with a first-half double for the visitors, despite Jack Rimmer responding with a 59th minute penalty.

The Roosters, who are ninth in the JD Cymru North, turn their attention back to league duties with a trip to face Ruthin on Saturday - but there were plenty of positives to take from a committed display.

A bright start from Prestatyn saw defender Kai Edward fire over following a corner, and they opened their account on nine minutes when Danny Davies scored after some good work by Alex Jones.

The hosts fought back well and frustrated the Prestatyn forwards, although experienced forward Jack Kenny, Davies and Dan Roberts all missed chances to double the lead midway through the half.

The crucial second goal arrived five minutes before the interval, however, when Davies latched on to a Kenny through ball and finished the chance well.

The Roosters showed great character as they raised their tempo after the break, and keeper Jon Rushton called into action with a brilliant save from a free-kick.

Jonathan Evans saw his strike fly wide for the hosts, but at the other end home keeper Leigh Jenkins was forced into a good save to deny Alex Jones a goal.

Penrhyn’s persistence paid off when they were awarded a penalty for handball, for which Michael Parker received a yellow card, and Jack Rimmer stepped up to emphatically to reduce the arrears.

Prestatyn almost restored their two-goal lead through Jordan Davies and Kenny, but they did enough to see out the remainder of the tie in comfortable fashion and secure their place in the hat.

Penrhyn boss Lewis will look for his side to make a positive response this week at Ruthin, who narrowly lost 2-1 at Aberystwyth in the Cup last weekend.
