PENRHYNCOCH were brought crashing down to earth after their thrilling win over JD Cymru North leaders Prestatyn the previous week, as Llanrhaeadr notched a solid 3-0 win at Cae Baker.

Gari Lewis’ side were looking to move clear of their mid Wales rivals, but goals by Khyam Wyton, Joe Vaughan and Iwan Matthews sentenced them to their sixth league defeat of a promising campaign.

Llan had made the journey to Penrhyn in good spirits after getting three points in their Montgomeryshire derby against Llanfair United the previous weekend.

They took just 10 minutes to open the scoring when Khyam Wyton sent Penrhyn keeper Leigh Jenkins the wrong way from the penalty spot, after Iwan Matthews had been fouled in the box.

Further pressure saw Joe Vaughan in the clear for the visitors, only to see his shot saved, and from the corner Jenkins pulled off a good save from Wyton. Penrhyn were struggling to break down a resilient visiting defence, and at the other end a good ball from Sam Thomas created a chance for Iwan Matthews, whose shot was again well saved by Jenkins.

Matthews’ corner then hit the upright, and an Iain Edmunds shot was blocked on the line and deflected wide, before the hosts stepped things up before the break.

Llan were back in the ascendancy at the start of the second half, however, and the first attack saw Tommy Evans blaze over the crossbar when he was well-placed.

Steffan Davies, Ifan Burrell and Jonathan Evans got shots away as Penrhyn looked for a response, but it was the visitors who looked more likely to score as Matty Williams saw his volley hit the bar.

Then, on the hour, Llan were awarded their second penalty of the game when Matthews was upended in the box, and although Jenkins made a great save to keep out Khyam’s spot kick, Joe Vaughan was on hand to force home the rebound.

A never-say-die Penrhyn fought their way back into the game, only to be denied by some excellent blocks, with keeper James Hayns making some good saves.

It was the visitors who had the final say, however, when in the last minute Matthew linked up well with Vaughan, and slotted home from the edge of the box to seal a disappointing day for the Roosters.
