PENRHYNCOCH’s basement worries in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance continue to mount after being edged out 2-1 by fellow strugglers Denbigh Town at rainswept Cae Baker.
The Roosters battled hard, but again emerged empty-handed as they slipped to a fifth successive defeat - and they have now gone 14 games without a victory.
Defeat keeps Gari Lewis’ side second-from-bottom, while they are now seven points adrift of league safety, with 11 games to go.
“It’s very hard to take, it was demoralising,” said manager Lewis, whose side have not won in 14 games.
“I’m doing everything I can, I don’t know what else I can do. The run we’re on is breaking me. I’m a local boy whose proud to be manager, but I was thinking of resigning after this.
“We need a bit of luck, but every week I keep saying that. We need to get a dirty win from somewhere, but at the moment a win still seems to be a long way off.
“Denbigh were a decent side, it was a 50-50 game, but we had a couple of great chances to go 1-0 up.
“We had one cleared off the line. We thought it was in, but were told all the ball was not over the line. They then go upfield and score, and that’s the way it’s going for us at the moment.”
For most part, there was little between the sides in the rain and wind, with both having their chances in a goalless opening half.
Kristian Pierce proved a threat for the visitors on his return from Rhyl, and was at the centre of Denbigh’s most threatening raids.
At the other end, Luke Sherbon had an effort blocked and Jon Foligno headed straight at keeper Craig Vernon following another promising attack.
The Roosters started the second period well enough, with Sherbon heading just wide from a Matt Mousley cross, and another cross was cleared off the line.
The hosts were stung by two quick-fire strikes in five minutes, with Pat Hincliffe firing in from a tight angle on the hour after a quick Denbigh counter attack.
Mark Roberts then got a second five minutes later when picking up a loose ball to slot into an empty net, after Leigh Jenkins had saved Pierce’s initial effort.
Penrhyn kept pushing, and eventually found a way through in injury time when Evans scored after a neat knock down from the returning Steff Davies.
In the end it was another agonisingly narrow defeat, with Lewis hoping their fortunes will finally change at Holyhead this weekend.
PENRHYN: Jenkins, Evans, James, Foligno, Mousley (Lamb 61), Williams (James 69), Jones, Rimmer, Sherbon (Davies 69), Shaw, Evans.
