PENRHYNCOCH boss Gari Lewis says last weekend’s washout will allow his players more time to shake off injuries before Saturday’s home clash with Denbigh Town at Cae Baker (2.30pm kick-off).
More prolonged rain saw Penrhyn’s trip to Gresford Athletic in the quarter-final of the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance Cup postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
The scheduled encounter at Clappers Lane was called off following an early morning pitch inspection, just before the Roosters had set out on the road.
It’s another game to fit in but, with several of his side carrying injuries, Lewis felt that the call-off could prove a blessing in disguise in their battle for Huws Gray Cymru Alliance survival.
“With the problems we’ve had, we’ve not been able to rotate the squad as we would have liked, and often had the same players on the pitch,” Lewis commented.
“A lot of them have been carrying knocks, so having no game has given them some more time to recover. We’ll train well this week, and hopefully everyone will be fresher, and raring to go on Saturday, which is another massive game for us.
“I rate Denbigh highly, they are a super outfit. They have dangerous strikers, and a lot of pace going forward, and so it is going to be a tough game for us.”
With the majority of the league sidelined by the weather, the Roosters remain eight points clear of the three basement places.
Lewis hopes to have more options at his disposal this weekend, with Jonathan Evans and Liam Doherty both back in contention after missing the 1-1 draw away at Rhyl last time out.
Carwyn Jones is close to a return following his groin injury, while Antonio Corbisiero was expected to train this week after having a cortisone injection in his troublesome heel injury.
Captain Owain James, however, will again miss out due to unavailability.
Midfielder Romanin Florin Burcea, who is back to fitness following a badly dislocated shoulder that kept him out for 18 months, is set to return to training, and he could also feature in the next couple of weeks.
In the only Cymru Alliance match to go ahead last weekend, league top-scorer Llyr Morris bagged a hat-trick as Ruthin Town thumped Rhyl 4-1 at home.
Youngster Will Owen had opened their account, whilst Rhyl netted a consolation through Alun Webb.
Flint Town United meanwhile advanced to the Huws Gray Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 victory away at Airbus UK Broughton. Ieuan Hewitt made the breakthrough on 32 minutes when his thunderbolt flew in from 30 yards out..
