PENRHYNCOCH boss Gari Lewis says that he will be making moves to bolster his side’s firepower after drawing other blank in their 1-0 defeat to Ruthin Town at Cae Baker.

A 65th minute goal from Kevin Evans proved enough to give the visitors the spoils, with the defeat keeping the Roosters languishing in the lower reaches of the Huws Gray Cymu Alliance table.

Worryingly, they failed to score at home for a second week running, following their goalless stalemate with lowly Holyhead Hotspur the Saturday before.

Penrhyn find themselves just one point above the bottom three in the table, but still within range of several sides above.

They will be looking for a timely boost when they head to face Gresford Athetic this Saturday, with the Latics lying just one position and two points above them, following a three-match losing run.

Chances were in short supply for Penrhyn last weekend, although Liam Lewis struck the post following a strong run.

Ruthin were expecting a tough game and got one. When half-time came, there had been few shots on target by either side, and just one shot off target each.

Gwydion Ifan fired over the bar for the visitors, but both defences remained on top, with Penrhyncoch unable to trouble centre backs Tom Dyer and Kevin Evans.

The second half was played in much the same manner, with Ruthin continuing to probe and pass as Penrhyn sat deep.

A breakthrough for either side looked unlikely until the visitors’ Kevin Evans fired in a tremendous shot, which led to a corner - and in the melee that followed keeper Leigh Jenkins made a good save, before Evans smashed his volley home.

This led to a change of tactics by Penrhyncoch, who now pushed men forward, and Ryan Goldston in the Ruthin goal started to have crosses to deal with.

Ruthin had chances on the break as suddenly opportunities started to open up at the other end, but they were happy to settle for a narrow and hard earned win.

The Roosters now turn their attentions to facing Gresford Athetic this Saturday, and manager Gari Lewis is eager to see his side make a return to winning ways.

Forward Steff Davies is out as he continues a three match ban, but Liam Lewis is expected to be back after missing last weekend through work commitments.

Jonathan Evans is set to return next month after a short spell with Borth United, while a couple of new faces could also be on the way to pep up Penrhyn’s squad.

Penrhyn have not won in eight games, a run stretching back to early September that has seen four defeats and four draws.

“Defensively we’re looking solid, but we’re not good enough going forward, and don’t really look like we’re going to score at the moment,” commented Lewis.

“The boys are working hard, but not doing enough in possession. We’re lacking a bit of pace, so it’s up to me to bring in one or two new players to give us a boost.

“There was not a lot in it last week, but Ruthin were the better footballing team, better technically, and deserved the win.”

He added: “Gresford is another big game. They’re on a tough run themselves at the moment, but are only losing by the odd goal, so it will be a difficult game.

“But we’re still not that far away, and we are only two wins off sixth position.”

The imminent return of frontrunner Jonathan Evans in the next few weeks will help revitalise the front line at Penrhyncoch, while another forward could also be on the way to Cae Baker on loan from Welsh Premier side Aberystwyth Town.
