PENRHYNCOCH suffered last-gasp agony as they let slip a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw against Conwy Borough, to stay in the lower reaches of the Cymru Alliance.

Two goals from Steff Davies early in the second half put the Roosters in sight of their first win in six league outings since defeating Flint at the start of September.

Conwy had other ideas, however, and clawed back to earn parity through a brace from Corrig McGonigle, his second in the last minute from the penalty spot.

The Roosters were left to reflect on what might have been at a windswept Y Morfa.

“For them to score a penalty with virtually the last kick of the game was a real sickener,” said Penrhyn boss Gari Lewis.

“We were gutted, but we would have taken a point when we travelled up there, so overall we have to remain positive.

“It was important to get off the 11-point mark which we’ve been on for a number of weeks, while results also went for us with three of the teams below us losing.”

He added: “There was not a lot between the teams. First half, Conwy got bodies forward and pinned us in, but Steff’s goals got us going in the second half.

“The boys again put in a good shift, but made wrong decisions at wrong times.”

Conwy enjoyed the better of the first half, but the Roosters held firm, before looking a stronger proposition playing against the wind in the second period.

They were rewarded when Davies opened the scoring with a well-taken shot in the box on 50 minutes, before heading home a second goal eight minutes later, to put the visitors in the driving seat.

Sub Liam Doherty missed a good chance to make it 3-0, when firing just wide, but Borough battled their way back and McGonigle tapped in from close range.

The hosts upped the pressure in the latter stages, and the Roosters repelled several raids but, in the dying moments, Carwyn Jones fouled in the box for a stonewall penalty, and McGonigle stepped up to convert the spot kick.

Penrhyn have no game on Saturday, with the Welsh Cup taking centre stage, so they will now take stock before hosting Holyhead Hotspur the following week.

The Roosters remain 12th in the table, two points above the bottom three, but still in range of a number of teams above.

“We are in a relegation scrap, and our aim, as in every season, is to remain in the league, which is an achievement for a village club like ours when you see the quality of the other teams,” said Lewis.

“Frustratingly, we have thrown away points this season, and could have had at least four more, which would have seen us up to sixth or seventh in the table.

“It’s very fine margins, so we have got be honest, and keep working hard.”
