MANAGER Gari Lewis was satisfied with a point after Penrhyncoch were locked in a goalless stalemate at home to lowly Holyhead Hotspur at Cae Baker.
The draw means that the Roosters remain in 12th position in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance, three points above the bottom three, but Lewis felt it could prove a useful point come the end of the season.
“We would have liked to have won, but I’d like to look at it as a point gained,” he said. “We did not play particularly well, we’ve got a few boys out of form at the moment, and we’re looking nervy.
“It was a poor game, the referee did not help, and there was no flow. We created the better chances in the first half, and they had the better of the second half, so overall I think a draw was a fair result.
“From a positive point of view, it was a clean sheet, it’s now back-to-back draws, and a point gained on everybody else.”
Looking for a timely win against rock-bottom Holyhead, Penrhyn had their moments in the first half with Josh Shaw heading wide, whilst Liam Lewis was off target with a chance and Luke Sherbon had another effort saved by Carl Jones.
At the other end, a Holyhead corner by Dean Garmey was headed just over the bar by Mel McGinniss, and a 20 yard free kick from Marc Evans struck the post.
Holyhead looked stronger in the second period, and Dean Garmey glanced a header just wide, but the Roosters thought they had gone ahead when Cledan Davies’ cross was dropped by keeper Jones.
Liam Lewis pounced on the loose ball, but saw his goalbound shot cleared by Rhys Brown, despite claims from the hosts that the ball had crossed the line.
Penrhyn’s hopes of forcing a win, however, suffered a blow when striker Steff Davies was shown a straight red following an off-the-ball incident with Holyhead keeper Jones 13 minutes from time.
The hosts had to soak up some late pressure, with Carwyn Jones making a timely block, and Mel McGinniss firing over. Tomos Carek tried an over head kick and a Dan McGinniss curler also went close, but the deadlock was not broken.
The match was the league’s only action due to international weekend, and had been rearranged after being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch in September.
The Roosters have not won since defeating Flint Town 1-0 back on 1 September, and have now drawn four and lost three of their last seven league outings.
The table remains tight, however, and they are only three points off Conwy Borough in seventh spot as they prepare for Saturday’s home clash against Ruthin.
“If we were to win, and results go for us, then we could climb as high as seventh, so we’re not far away,” added Lewis. “We’re working hard, and we’re proving a hard team to beat, and everything can change very quickly in this league.”
Striker Steff Davies is set for a three match ban after being sent off against Holyhead, while Luke Sherbon and Liam Lewis also face suspensions for an accumulation of bookings in recent weeks.
