PENRHYNDEUDRAETH surged two goals ahead in the first half of their Lock Stock Welsh Alliance second-versus-third showdown at Trearddur Bay United, only to be pegged back to a 2-2 draw at the end.
Andrew Jones’ side impressed from the start at the Lon Isallt ground, and produced enough chances to have had the match won long before the interval.
Tom Smith opened Penrhyn’s account on 27 minutes, beating keeper Elliot Smith in a one-on-one, and Neil Thomas doubled the score five minutes later from 18 yards out, after pressure from a corner.
Tom Smith also confronted Bay’s keeper, only to lose out, while Steve Jones powered a fine header that was well saved.
Trearddur, playing with the confidence of reigning champions, suddenly closed up with a reply goal from Jordan Murphy, netting past keeper Rob Watson on 40 minutes, to catch the visitors napping.
The second half was packed with action and goals were always likely at both ends.
It was Murphy again who scored Trearddur’s equaliser on 58 minutes when punishing a Penrhyn defensive mistake, but neither side managed a winning goal.
Barmouth and Dyffryn United felt hard done by when beaten by hosts Abergele Town by an only goal, after having created enough chances to have gained something from an absorbing encounter.
The decisive moment came on 35 minutes, when Abergele’s Jamie Hobson tucked away the rebound, after his penalty was blocked by Adam Walters.
The spot-kick, which was given for handball by a Barmouth defender, figured among a number of contentious decisions.
Barmouth’s manager Llyr Hughes reckoned his team had three decent penalty claims rejected, whereas Abergele felt that the match official had played as much as 11 minutes of added time at the end.
Barmouth, with Elwyn Edwards dominating in central defence, looked at their best going forward in the second half, notably in the final quarter-of-an-hour.
With Abergele down to 10 men, after Ben Pamment’s red card dismissal, Barmouth’s Rob Murfet dashed clear three times, but was unable to produce the equaliser which the visitors deserved.
Pwllheli’s visit to Llanrwst United was postponed, because the Gwydyr Park ground was waterlogged, and also called off was St Asaph City v Llangefni Town.
Elsewhere in the Welsh Alliance division one three scorers named Jones combined to make Nantlle Vale 3-0 home winners over Greenfield, with Aled netting after 15 minutes, Sion after 43 and Jack on 60.
Llandudno Junction settled for a 1-0 win over rivals Glan Conwy in the Flyover ground derby, which featured Lee Ellis’s goal for the home team on 40 minutes.
Meanwhile in the Mawddach Challenge Cup, Llandyrnog United beat Llanberis by an only goal from Mark Roberts after 42 minutes to reach the quarter-finals, setting up an away tie against Llangefni Town on Saturday week, 18 February.
