PENRHYNCOCH look assured of Huws Gray Cymru Alliance survival after maintaining their revival with a 2-1 win over Ruthin Town last weekend.

Two goals from Harri Horwood in the second half proved enough to claim a precious three points, after the Roosters staged a superb away performance at Bala Town’s Maes Tegid ground.

The Roosters were made to battle all the way though, and they managed to withstand sustained late pressure, despite Ruthin being reduced to nine players during the second period.

Fifth-from-bottom Penrhyn are three points above Holyhead Hotspur, who have one game left, and are just one point behind Flint Town United.

Manager Gari Lewis, whose side has picked up 11 points from five games, said he was delighted with their resolve - especially without Cledan Davies, Nashawn Blake, Jonathan Evans, Jon Foligno and Steff Davies.

“The boys never cease to amaze me,” Lewis said. “We went there with just 12 fit players and me on the bench, so to come away with a win was a fantastic effort.

“I really can’t stress how impressed I was with the whole team, the experienced boys and the younger ones. Not many teams could cope the way we did with five front line players missing.

“For about an hour we looked good, strong and compact, but once Ruthin went down to nine men they changed their system and they really gave it to us.

“It was a torrid, crazy last 20 minutes for us. It was backs to the wall, and I have to give Ruthin a lot of credit.

“But, like we have done a lot of times, we dug in, put bodies on the line, and came away with a fantastic win.”

Buoyed by another fine victory, the Roosters will look to maintain the form at home to Porthmadog tonight (Wednesday) before then having a weekend off.

“After having just 12 players last week, we hope to have a 17 man squad against Porthmadog,” added Lewis.

“They have been a bit inconsistent this season, but they are full of quality players, and on their day are one of the top sides in the league.

“We will have to be on our game, but we’re looking forward to being back at home, and getting a good crowd.”

Horwood opened his account when smashing home a loose ball six minutes after the break when keeper Ryan Goldston failed to hold it.

Moments later, Roosters keeper Leigh Jenkins pulled off a fine save to keep out Garmon Hafal’s header, with Carwyn Jones quick to block the follow-up shot.

The visitors then doubled their lead when Horwood, just seven minutes after celebrating his first, found the net again from Liam Lewis’ cross following a fine move.

Ruthin were back in the hunt when Kev Evans headed in a left wing cross on 65 minutes, but the game appeared to swing in Penrhyn’s favour two minutes later when Ruthin’s Will Ashley was dismissed for his second booking in the space of three minutes.

They went down to nine two minutes later as Ashley was followed by Ian Hughes for his second caution.

Ruthin, however, made light of the dismissals to stage a stirring response, and Jordan MacCarter rattled the post from the edge of the box, and Jenkins advanced to deny Llyr Morris.
