PENRHYNCOCH boss Gari Lewis felt that his side’s 2-2 draw with Huws Gray Cymru Alliance basement rivals Caersws was a fair result at Cae Baker on Wednesday.

The Roosters had led 2-0 just past the half hour mark with goals from Stef Davies and Jonathan Evans, but the Bluebirds hit back to earn parity, courtesy of Tom Bowen and former Penrhyn player Luke Sherbon.

Having been two goals ahead following such a fine start, there would have been an air of disappointment on the part of the hosts. But the result keeps them eight points clear of the Bluebirds who, with three games in hand, remain in the third basement position.

"Overall it was a fair result, and it was important we didn’t lose," said Lewis.

"I know it’s a cliche, but it was a game of two halves. We were on top in the first, went 2-0 up and had we gone into half time with a two goal lead, then it may have been different.

"But we conceded a soft free kick. It was a wonderful strike, and it gave them a huge lift before half time.

"They put us under pressure in the second half, caused us a lot of problems, and in the end it was a fair result between two sides who gave it everything."

Penrhyn made a strong start, taking the lead on eight minutes as Cledan Davies’ free kick was spilled by keeper David Jones, and Stef Davies tapped in the loose ball.

Tom Bowen of Caersws unleashed a rocket of strike from about 20 yards which went just wide, but at the other end Evans chased down a long ball and forced the visiting keeper to clear.

Evans, however, doubled the lead on 33 minutes when firing home after Carwyn Jones had beat his man down the right hand side and delivered a teasing ball.

Caersws heads did not drop and they made an immediate response when Bowen pulled one back three minutes later with a terrific free kick from the edge of the box.

Sion James then soon had the ball in the net at the other end from an Evans free kick, but the linesman had his flag up and the effort was disallowed.

At the other end the lively Sherbon timed his run well to meet a cross from the left, but his effort flew over the bar and Penrhyn went on at the break a goal up.

Caersws came out for the second half with real purpose, and were back on terms on 51 minutes through a well taken finish from Sherbon after a smart move.

Penrhyn fought back, with Evans making a good burst through the middle, but he dragged his shot for the visiting keeper to collect.

Sherbon’s free kick was held well by Leigh Jenkins at the other end, who was also quick off his line to deny the former Aberystwyth Town captain.

Penrhyn had to defend resolutely, with skipper Owain James throwing himself at the ball to keep out a certain goal, and Matt Mousley cleared another dangerous attack.

Tom Bowen fired a free kick over in the closing minutes, but Penrhyn held firm to secure a determined draw.

The Roosters have little time to recover from tired legs and some knocks as they now prepare to host Porthmadog on Saturday (2.30pm).
