PENRHYNCOCH kept their flag flying in the JD Welsh Cup after being taken to extra time by Swansea club Garden Village in a testing first round tie.
Trailing 3-1 to goals from Elliott Rees and Joshua Bradshaw, with a brace, they clawed their way back to level 3-3 at the end of normal time before Steff Davies struck the winner in the extra period, his second goal of the game.
The Roosters will be back on the road again for the second round next month after being drawn away to Caerphilly Athletic, the tie to be played on Saturday, 4 November. The South Wales Alliance side defeated Carmarthen Stars 4-1 in the first round after extra time.
Penrhyn would be mighty relieved to have overcome a battling Garden Village side with Jonathan Evans and Rob Murfet also on target as well as Davies’ brace.
Keeper Leigh Jenkins also made a key penalty save earlier in the game to protect the visitors lead, while he also pulled off another terrific stop from a mishit shot.
Roosters boss Gari Lewis admitted his side had to battle all the way against spirited hosts before keeping their interest alive in the competition.
"We were cruising for the first 20 minutes, went ahead, but when they scored, we went off the boil," he said.
"They made it very difficult for us. We knew they were a strong, physical side, well organised and dangerous from set pieces, and it was a really tough day for us.
"We did not play that well, but we dug in and got there in the end, and I was really proud of the boys.
"Our superior fitness showed, and after 80 minutes only one team was going to win. With the game as it was, it was difficult to make changes, but it was a real 15-man effort."
Evans opened the scoring with a neat finish when latching onto a through ball before lifting the ball over the keeper.
But the Swansea side hit back, and looked as though they had the second round ticket well within their grasp as they led 3-1.
The Roosters, however, showed their resolve to claw their way back with Murfet reducing the arrears with a fine strike.
Davies then took the tie into extra time before completing the fightback with his second of the game.
After their cup victory, Penrhyncoch now return to the business of ensuring they stay clear of basement trouble in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance when they host Holyhead Hotspur on Saturday (2.30).
Antonio Corbisiero faces a fitness check on cracked ribs but Nashawn Blake is still doubtful with a knee injury.
Meanwhile, the Roosters have been boosted by the return to the club of Cledan Davies from local rivals Aberystwyth Town.
Davies played against Garden Village, and Lewis described his arrival as a "great signing for the club" and thanked the Black and Greens for their help in the transfer.
The 27-year-old defender will be having his second spell at Cae Baker after being loaned to Penrhyn from the Black and Greens at the end of August 2010.
