Penrhyncoch pulled off the greatest of escapes on a pulsating final day of the season to dramatically secure their survival in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance - by the skin of their teeth.
Cae Baker has hardly seen more dramatic finishes as the Roosters struck twice in the closing moments to secure a breathtaking 3-2 win over Conwy Borough.
Victory lifted Gari Lewis’ side out of the relegation zone on goal difference at the expense of Holywell Town who, despite their 3-0 home win over Holyhead Hotspur, will drop down next season.
They will be joined by Denbigh Town who, having already finished their fixtures, slipped into the drop zone on the last day, while basement side Holyhead were already relegated fro tier two.
The Roosters had looked down and out last month, but showed terrific heart and character to haul themselves out of danger with an unbeaten five-match run that saw them pick up 11 points.
After witnessing the thrilling finale, Penrhyncoch manager Gari Lewis admitted the moment would live with him for a long time after seeing his village club secure their place in the new FAW Conference North League next season.
Despite taking the lead through Cledan Davies, prospects did not look good when Conwy went 2-1 up with nine minutes left. However, Penrhyn showed their never-say-die attitude with late strikes from Jonathan Evans and Josh Shaw making it a day to savour at Cae Baker.
"I’m the happiest man in Wales," said Lewis. "I’ve had a lot of special moments in my career in football, but this tops the lot after everything we had to do in the last five weeks. It’s an amazing story, and the scenes at the end will live with me forever.
"Conwy are a dangerous outfit, they carry a big threat with the three boys up front, but we took the game to them, without being too gung-ho.
"When we went 2-1 down, the whole ground went flat, and you start thinking that’s it, but the lads never gave up, and I’m so proud of them all.
"It was a great finish, very special, and you could not have written it any better with local boy Josh Shaw getting the winner."
He added: "We looked down and out five or six weeks ago, but we stuck together, and kept doing the right things. We managed to hang in there, and the results came at the right time for us.
"To be staying up is an amazing feeling, but I also feel for Holyhead, Denbigh and Holywell, and their managers, as they are fantastic clubs, and wish them all the best for the future."
Jack Rimmer had a terrific game for the hosts at right back, before being forced off late on with a torn calf muscle, while Owain James put in a captain’s performance after managing to overcome an ankle injury to play. The Roosters made a bright start, with Jonathan Evans forcing Conwy keeper Ben Heald into a smart save on eight minutes after latching onto Antonio Corbisiero’s ball over the top, while Stef Davies narrowly failed to make contact with a cross from the lively Rimmer.
Sion James headed wide from a free kick, while Evans missed a golden chance when denied by the legs of Heald when through on goal.
Having dominated much of the first half, Penrhyn were given a warning early in the second period when Corig McGonigle - chasing the league’s Golden Boot honour - fired a shot against the post.
But the Roosters made the breakthrough their efforts deserved just past the hour when Stef Davies’ cross was headed out to midfielder Cledan Davies who produced a neat finish into the bottom corner,
After going behind, Conwy were sparked into action, and threatened with Dean Seagar crashing a superb half volley against the bar.
Holywell, however, were not to be denied on 70 minutes when Seager headed in a McConigle corner and, after keeper Leigh Jenkins had pulled off a terrific save, Cory Williams lobbed the visitors in front 10 minutes later.
But the Roosters were not finished as they roared back with two late goals - first Evans turning to volley home following a Cledan Davies corner to level matters on 83 minutes.
Then, four minutes later, Shaw smashed home after a defensive slip to spark wild scenes of joy. Even then, there were still five tense minutes of injury time to navigate before the celebrations could start in earnest. Before the kick off, there had been a minute’s silence for former club physio Llew Evans, for whom Lewis dedicated this memorable win at Cae Baker.PENRHYNCOCH (v Conwy Borough): L Jenkins, J Rimmer (C Lamb 72), S James, J Foligno (L Doherty 76), T Evans, C Davies, O James (capt), J Shaw (L Sherbon 89), A Corbisiero, J Evans, S Davies.
