PENRHYNCOCH will be chasing a place in the last 16 of the FA of Wales Trophy when they entertain Penrhyndeudraeth in Saturday’s fourth round at Cae Baker.
The Roosters have impressed this season, currently unbeaten in the Spar Mid Wales League division one, while also going great guns in the Welsh Cup as well as the Trophy.
Their only defeat came when losing 2-0 at Welsh Premier side Airbus UK in the second round of the Word Cup back in September.
So they justifiably start as favourites against a Penrhyndeudraeth side that arrives at Cae Baker lying a modest 12th position in the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance division one.
But Roosters player boss Gari Lewis anticipates a tricky encounter, knowing his players cannot afford to look too far ahead in the competition.
"I’ve had a look at the other clubs left in the Trophy, and there are some fantastic clubs left, but first we have to focus on Penrhyndeudraeth," he said.
"They’ve had a bit of a hit and miss season, but they’ve got some good pedigree in their team with ex pros like Paul Roberts who used to play for Wrexham.
"They beat league leaders Llangefni 4-1 the other week, so they can be a handful when they click, so we certainly cannot take anything for granted and we’ll train well and do our prep this week."
The Roosters boss has a near full strength at his disposal, and has selection issues as he ponders the make-up of his front line, with Mattie Davies pressing for a place in the starting line-up.
Midfielder Bari Morgan was due to undergo an operation to remedy a hip problem this week, and could be out for between six to eight weeks, while captain Owain James is off to work in New Zealand in the next fortnight.
"We’ve got a strong squad, but I may look to add another signing," added Lewis.
High flying Penrhyncoch, meanwhile, were frustrated by the weather as last Saturday’s top of the table trip to Welshpool in the Spar Mid Wales League division one was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Maesydre.
They remain in pole position on goal difference, with the main beneficiaries being Llanrhaeadr who are now just one point behind after beating the elements to record a 2-0 win against Llanidloes Town.
