PENRHYNCOCH take a break from the Cymru Alliance to visit Berriew in the first round of the JD Welsh Cup this Saturday, before hosting Bangor City at Cae Baker the following week.
Manager Gari Lewis is hoping for the return of front man Steff Davies for the first time this season following his knee surgery, and this boost could be just the tonic that his side needs.
“He’s trained well, but we didn’t want to risk him on the 4G pitch at Airbus, but he will definitely be coming in against Berriew,” said Lewis.
“He brings a lot of qualities to the team with his drive and power, he is strong with his back to goal, and I’m sure he will help turn things around.
“We’ve got a few players who are a little short on confidence at the moment, and we’re not quite hitting our straps. It’s small margins, and it wouldn’t take a lot to put things right."Penrhyncoch failed to halt high-flying Airbus Broughton as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the runaway Huws Gray Cymru Alliance leaders at a blustery Airfield last weekend. The Wingmakers made it a perfect 10 wins from 10 to stay firmly on course for a return to the JD Welsh Premier, with Brady McGilloway’s early strike separating the sides at the interval before Leo Riley doubled the advantage with a free kick in the second period.“I thought we defended well against Airbus, we had a couple of chances, but we didn’t really ask them enough questions when going forward," said Lewis.
“But I’m not too despondent as Airbus are a class outfit, and it will take something special from another team to stop them winning the league.”
Lewis anticipates a stern challenge at fourth-placed MMP Mid Wales division one side Berriew if his charges are to progress in the Welsh Cup this Saturday.
The sides met in a friendly during the summer, and the Roosters manager added: “It’s going to be a really difficult game as I expect the pitch to be heavy, which will be a great leveller.
“They have also got some decent players, who can cause you real problems if you’re not on your game.
“But we’ve got Steff back, which will be a massive boost, and we’ve also got Eilian Evans and Jonathan Evans to come back in, so I have got some tough selection decisions to make.”.
Elsewhere in the competition, Borth United, who beat Bow Street in the last round, will travel to face Llangefni Town, whilst Llanidloes Town will entertain Pontypridd Town.
