PENRHYNCOCH held their nerve to book a place in the second round of the JD Welsh Cup with a 2-1 home win over South Wales Alliance division one side Cardiff Corinthians AFC at Cae Baker.

Steff Davies hit the winner for the JD Cymru North side, after Jonathan Evans’ opening goal was cancelled out by Owain James’ unfortunate own goal.

Gari Lewis’ side had started brightly, with Jonathan Evans firing over, but it needed a fine save from Leigh Jenkins to deny the visitors on the counter-attack.

A darting run saw Penrhyn’s Tom Evans cut in, but his effort lacked power, but Corries then forced a great finger-tip save by Jenkins from the edge of the box.

Either side of the interval, Steff Davies turned well, but his effort went high and wide, and then a superb run and cross from Jack Rimmer found the head of Lance Jones whose header went just over.

Jones was also denied by fine save after finding himself one on one with the keeper, but Jenkins was called into action again - before the deadlock was broken.

Rimmer’s delivery caused mayhem in the box, the Corries keeper dropped the ball and Jonathan Evans was on hand to poke home the opener after 59 minutes.

Lance Jones was also denied by a superb save, and Rimmer’s free-kick was blocked by the wall, but the visitors rallied in the closing minutes of the game.

Just as it seemed that Penrhyn would hold on, a quick beak down the right saw the ball played into the box and an unfortunate Owain James diverted the ball into his own net for a well-deserved equaliser.

In deteriorating conditions, Sion James had to make a superb last-ditch challenge to deny the visitors in the first half of extra time, and in the second period Lance Jones and Ifan Burrell both went close, after great hold up play from Steff Davies.

With penalties looming, Penrhyn finally snatched victory in injury time as the visitors failed to clear a delivery from sub Antonio Corbisiero, and Steff Davies slid in to bundle home the winning goal.

• LLANIDLOES Town edged through 4-3 on penalties after their tie at high-flying South Wales League division one side Trefelin BGC ended 2-2 after extra-time.

Trefelin had made the breakthrough late on when Thomas Krauze outpaced the Daffs’ defence and slid the ball across the box into the path of substitute Devonald Kane, who finished it off superbly.

Llanidloes hit back to force extra-time, however, when some great build up play saw the ball fed through for Jack Biggs, who calmly slotted home their equaliser.

At the start of extra-time, Drew Reynolds scored with a towering header from a corner, but Trefelin hit back in the second period as Joseph Jones’ strike was parried into the path of Damon Thomas, who slotted home to force a penalties.
