PORTHMADOG brought down the curtain on the old year with a 7-0 beating of Llandudno Junction, as they completed a spectacular 14 goals’ home-and-away double over the Cymru Alliance basement whipping boys.

In a sequel to the almost identical 7-1 tally enjoyed at the expense of the then league newcomers at their own Arriva ground in mid-August, Craig Papirnyk’s men imposed two bursts of goals at home.

Porth took control with two efforts on target in four minutes in the first quarter-of-an-hour and piled up another five goals in the game’s concluding 25 minutes.

Taking centre stage was Julian Williams, who netted a hat-trick, taking his season’s total to 12 goals, and there were singles by three team-mates, plus an own-goal.

Winless Llandudno Junction had presented the first threat on 13 minutes, when Joel Hewitt swept over a cross towards the far post, for home keeper Richard Harvey to have to scamper across to collect.

The only other time in the entire match that Junction got anywhere near Porthmadog’s target occurred five minutes into the second half, when Dean Seager found the net, but was whistled up for offside.

Porthmadog, who had gone close with a header by Iwan Lewis just a few minutes after the kick-off, secured the breakthrough goal on 10 minutes, thanks to Ifan Emlyn, who fired an edge-of-box low drive past visiting keeper Keighan Jones.

The home team’s lead was doubled on 14 minutes in fortuitous fashion, as Sion Edwards, a recent signing from Bangor City, swept the ball over from the left for Llandudno Junction’s Iain Bennett to head an attempted clearance into his own net.

Porth controlled the rest of the half’s exchanges and went close through Williams on 18 minutes, following Cai Jones’s left cross, and Jones himself on 33, raising the ball over the bar from a Lewis supply.

More near-misses littered the second period, as a totally dominant Porthmadog searched for the extra goals they merited, and the chances that went astray involved in particular Meilir Williams twice.

The inevitable flurry of goals began on 65 minutes, when Julian Williams cut inside from the left side, took Emlyn’s assist, and shot low inside the near post.

That opened the floodgates and Porthmadog’s spree was continued by Williams on 67 minutes, Gareth Jones-Evans on 70, Williams with his third on 80 and, leaving the best until last, Sion Bradley with a tight-angled special from the left on 89.
