PORTHMADOG’s five-match winning streak in front of their own fans came to an end in a 2-1 defeat at the Traeth by Guilsfield, who exploited two mistakes.

Craig Papirnyk’s team were left frustrated in the end by a needlessly conceded penalty just before half-time, and then a misdirected pass around the hour.

When they trimmed the arrears through Josh Banks, only 13 minutes remained, and that was not enough time for anything else to be gained, with Guilsfield going close, in fact, to a third goal at the end.

First half initiatives saw Banks have a shot well saved by Andrew Witcherley, whilst Julian Williams raised the ball just over the bar and Sion Bradley sent in an effort that was diverted out for a corner.

In the run-up to the interval, Joe Chaplin provided a hopeful drive that was cleared by the Guilsfield defence but then, on 41 minutes, the visitors snatched the lead.

Jake Cook advanced along the right, cut in along the bye-line, and brought a lunging tackle from Tomos Emlyn, to prompt referee Ellis Hughes to point to the spot.

Cook drilled the spot kick hard and low, and although a diving Richard Harvey got a hand to the ball, he was unable to save.

Porthmadog had breathed sighs of relief at Guilsfield’s near-misses, with Cook firing wide, Adam Jenkins steering into Harvey’s hands, Andrew Ford forcing a tip-over and Harvey saving twice in a melee.

Much of the second half was fought out in midfield, until on 63 minutes Porthmadog were punished for a wayward pass.

Guilsfield’s Louis Irvine surged forward along the left, moved into the centre and despatched a powerful low 18-yarder beyond Harvey, and just inside the post.

At 2-0 down, Porthwere in trouble, but they gained a glimmer of hope on 77 minutes, when a corner by Bradley from the left sparked a scramble in the goalmouth, and Banks applied a close-range finish.

Guilsfield had the best of the late chances, though, when Callum Bromley fluffed from six yards, but then, deep into added time, Porthmadog’s Iddon Price sent a 25-yarder that was tipped over the bar.
