PENRHYNCOCH continued their creditable pre-season with a 2-0 success over Buckley Town at Cae Baker as they stepped up preparations for next month’s Huws Gray Cymru Alliance opener.

After hitting back twice to secure a 2-2 draw with Port Talbot Town in their opening friendly the week before, and defeating Llanfair United 1-0 in midweek, the Roosters kept up the good work.

Goals in each half from Tregaron hot shot Rhun Garner and Nathan Warren saw Penrhyn overcome a strong Buckley side, who are in the Welsh National League premier division this term following relegation from the Cymru Alliance.

“They were a big strong side, but we put in a solid performance,” said Penrhyn player-boss Gari Lewis after the game, which was hit by a torrential rainstorm.

“We had 20 guys and a couple of triallists who all performed well, and they’re giving me a selection headache. We’ve got a strong squad, which is a nice problem.”

The only downside was that defender Jon Foligno missed out after suffering a hamstring injury in the win against Llanfair a few days before, the only goal of that game being an Owain James header.

Forward Liam Doherty also picked up a hamstring strain against Buckley, but Lewis has plenty of options as he continues to run the rule over his squad in Saturday’s trip to Haverfordwest County.

Llanidloes Town meanwhile shared a 1-1 friendly draw with Denbighshire visitors Corwen as their pre-season got off to an encouraging start at Victoria Avenue.

After the game had been delayed by a rainstorm, Richie Evans - back at the club from Carno - gave the Daffs an interval lead when converting after Steve Jones had whipped in an excellent corner.

Joe Evans also went close in the second half when seeing an effort headed off the line, with the keeper beaten, but the Welsh National League premier division visitors hit back through a Ioz Jones strike.

“It was a decent, competitive test against good opposition,” said Llanidloes manager Hugh Clarke. “It was a good run out for everyone, and I would expect a few players to be aching after that game.

“We made seven changes at half time, and everyone showed they want to fight for places this season. We’ve got a fair squad, and have players who can come off the bench and make a difference.”

The Daffs continued their pre-season with a second friendly away to FC Oswestry on Tuesday night, before welcoming Hereford Lads Club on Saturday.

Bow Street had started their pre-season with a 2-0 win over Dolgellau, with Tom Williams scoring both goals, and they followed that up with another encouraging 3-1 win over Welsh Alliance club Felinheli.

Goals from Garmon Nutting, Tom Williams and Tom Evans capped their win last weekend, and the Magpies make the journey to face Welsh League side Llantwit Major in good heart this weekend.

Promoted Borth United began their preparations for life in the Spar Mid Wales League division one with a 1-0 friendly win over Costcutter League side Dewi Stars, with Clive Morgan scoring the only goal of the game, but last weekend’s match against Berriew was cancelled.

Tywyn/Bryncrug followed up their 3-3 draw with Llanrwst, with goals by Aled Jones, with a brace, and Nick Williams, with an excellent 3-0 win over Penrhyndeudraeth, courtesy of goals from Mike Leuty, Aston Heath and Aled Jones.
